Slowing Down Hair Loss

SInce I’m basically talking to myself on this thread, I’ll keep going . . .

I think that older women (i.e., +27) really start to not give a shit about guys having full heads of hair. This may not translate well on the Internet, but in the past couple weeks, two of the gals I work with have separately volunteered the fact that it is a total non issue for them. And it wasn’t done in a way as if to try and make me feel better; it was more like they were telling me about going out with guys who don’t have hair and they kind of dug it. It’s almost like (groomed) chest hair: there is a whole sub-culture of women who actually get off on that shit. I guess it’s the man vs. boy dynamic; women want me. Girls want their pretty, hairless boys.

Since this thread has derailed into bickering and eic talking to himself, I’ll derail it a bit further.

Do those of you with shaved heads have anything to say to someone who’s going to be shaving his head for the first time? Tips, things to expect, things to watch out for, preshave routine, postshave, etc. I’m probably going to pick up a headblade and do it that way, but I just want a little info before taking the plunge.

I take offense to your comments sir. I’m 27 and have no chest/stomach/back hair at all… People ask me if I shave and I just tell em that it doesn’t grown in. I think it’s the little but of indian (feather not dot) blood in me… It’s not my fault!!!

I’ve read a fair amount about MPB. A few thoughts…

1.) Finasteride and Minoxidil are the only two treatments “proven” to work. And by “proven”, I mean that big pharmaceutical companies have put up the dollars to research them because there is so much money to be made (in the case of Finasteride, it was used as a treatment for prostate enlargement until they found the neat side effect of stopping hair loss, similar to the stories of Viagra and Wellbutrin). This does not mean other treatments don’t work, just that nobody has put up the money to research them.

2.) Personal experiences: Finasteride made me cranky. I hate using that word, but it’s the only way to describe it. I became a moody, whiny bitch. Oh, and it made my left nipple swell up. Luckily the lump went away after cessation of use. The method of efficacy for finasteride is very crude…it stops T from being changed to DHT, all over your body! You only want this to happen near your scalp. It’s like blowing up an ant hill with a hydrogen bomb. Minoxidil didn’t have any side effects, but it is oily and disgusting, smells like pepper and will stain your pillow. Oh, and if you have a cat, don’t even think of using it. Cats are attracted to the scent of it and will lick it off your scalp, with the unfortunate side effect of KILLING THEM. Seriously…look it up.

3.) The active ingredient in Nizoral dandruff shampoo has been shown in several studies to be effective at preventing MPB. Ketoconazole has the double function of blocking DHT binding to hair follices, and reducing inflammation around the area. I’ve used the 2% solution for a few years now, a couple times a week, and haven’t lost any hair. I should be nearly bald now, based on my family history. The reason you haven’t heard more about this as a hairloss product is that the FDA has only approved it for anti-dandruff treatments.
Use it…even the 2% version is cheap and lasts forever.

4.) Nioxin OTC shampoo has gotten rave reviews from quite a few users. This is a daily shampoo/conditioner that you can buy at most drug stores.

5.) There has been some (limited) evidence that the amount of dietary copper you consume can affect hair loss. Avocados have a ton of copper in them. Even if it doesn’t work for your hair, it’s still one of the healthiest foods you can eat

To those who say “shave it off, be a man”…that’s all well and good if you have a nicely shaped head. We lumpy-headed, quasimodo-looking motherfuckers have to resort to other measures…

Buzz it first. Definitely use a headblade. Hair grows from the center/crown of your head out, so shave with the grain. Rinse frequently. Use long strokes./no homo

You’ll probably need to clean up the top of your head and hairline around the forehead/temples a bit with a regular razor afterward. It’s really not hard.

Getting to bed early and managing stress definitly help.

Here in London’s financial district practically nobody gets 8 hours sleep and regularly putting yourself under extreme pressure is worn as a badge of honour. Not suprisingly there is way more baldness than anywhere else in the country and 1% of men tops have a totally full head of hair.

Seriously though, if it’s going to happen it’s going to happen, there’s no point in wasting your time, money, and life worrying about hair loss.

If you start balding, just sack up and buzz it. At the very least you’ll have a ton more money for Biotest products compared to those people who pay for all those ridiculous treatments and transplants that look hideous anyways.

Yeah, hair cloning is coming shortly.

Yeah, but if you got Indian blood in you, then your head hair should be staying put, right? I mean, on the hierarchy of looks, the muscular, hairless, clean shaven, full head of hair, dark skinned look is tops. But for dudes who are balding, your ass better find a way to grow some facial hair.

The only exception is if you want to shave it slick bald. Of course, you can (should?) pull that off without facial hair. This is a decent look too, but takes a lot of effort, IMO. I am too fucking lazy to shave my head and face every single day. Also, if you intend to go slick bald, you will again need to find a way to get tan.

Shave your fucking head. I’m 19 and I’ve been getting severely bald so I just said ‘fuck it’ and attacked my head with a razor. You won’t regret it.

(Old Minoxidil episode reference.)

Ahh, so that’s where he got those liver spots.

Ideally people should be promoted because of merit and hard work, but check out this article about the physical appearances of CEOs

It doesn’t mention hair specifically, but I’m sure it’s a factor, whether subconscious or not. Given two equal candidates (same experience, same background, etc0, a lot of hiring managers would go for the better-looking one, I think.

I’ve taken Finasteride and Rogaine for the last 12 years. I’ve had zero side effects from taking them. I’ve also competed in bodybuilding during that time.

I wanted to keep my hair, thus my use of the above products. It’s your call whether you want to keep your hair but don’t let fears of side effects impact your decision significantly.

the stuff headblade makes to shave with is the bomb.

imo the headblade is a tad overhyped.

but i normally just buzz my hair with no guard once every 1-2 weeks.

That’s understandable, but at the same time you gotta realize that having hair doesn’t equal good looking. Most people aren’t that good looking, whether they got hair or not.

Regardless, my hair’s going back a bit on the sides, and as much as I’d like it if it stayed where it is, it’s doing what it wants. And I being as I’m not the type that’s going to take a pill every morning for the rest of my life, I just can’t see myself trying some of the drugs for it, and then worrying what happens when they stop working and going through the shit again. And paying for all that shit as well.

When it gets bad enough, I’ll buzz it down and saying fuck it, and I haven’t had any problems… either work related or poontang related.

Yes, the Brits have the patent on this, and have had some promising results. My guess is, that within the next 5-10 yrs, this issue will be a thing of the past, for those who can afford it at least.
