Gene Rychlak Called Out

Powerlifting used to be more popular. It was televised back in the 70s and 80s. I think it definitely has the potential to be popular. Everyone in the gym can identify with 3 basic exercises. If WSM can be a televised sport on TV, why can’t powerlifting?

No!

Powerlifting had more popularity due to it’s unity. Bodybuilding was also on tv at that time to if you recall. It was very common to see the NOC, olympia, or Universe on tv.

Strongman is more interesting and translates better to tv than powerlifting or bodybuilding.

I saw powerlifting on cable not so long ago. The commentator had no idea what he was talking about–he obviously had no background in the sport at all. Which is a shame, as there are so many people who could have done a great job.
