Vinny's Strongman Log II

Well I train the log regularely myself and am happy to have you as a source of information and motivation. It would be very cool to see a video of your log cleans or full log c&p if you have the possibility. I am excited for your 320 and have no doubt that it will go down soon. Keep it up man!

@Koestrizer Soon it shall fall, my friend. Thanks for the words.

6/23/16 - Don’t call it a comeback…but…

Farmers Walk (drop and repick at half way for all sets)
120x70’
180x70’
220x70’
260x70’ this used to be a high demand of a set back in the day, walk felt awful in terms of stability but it was no sweat.
300x70’ heaviest weight I’ve walked with but definitely not for long. Got plenty more in me soon!

Did not push it as my left quad was feeling iffy from front squats. My adductors were feeling strained on the pick as well, but most of all, my baby hands have had it WAY too easy. They are screaming in pain from only a couple heavy farmers which really says a lot about how tough this is for the hands. Requires some thicker calluses before I go pushing it.

Bent Row
135x8
185x8

275x8

To finish the session, I made it up in my mind to walk up and down the hill of my backyard in a straight line 100 times each way totaling 12,500 feet, or about 2.4 miles/3.8Km…with a 45lb bar on my back in 98 degree heat. I ended up doing it “easily”, but by the end I felt the worst cold shakes I’ve ever had (heat stroke, yum!) and I kept telling myself “10, get 11…” and so on at each turn around. My god this was awful! My body physically felt fine aside from the annoyance of having to adjust the bar from the scarecrow wide grip to the close grip on the finger tips, but by the end I was just feeling overheated and pretty much on the verge of falling over and dying.

So, I am stupid, but I’m not stupid enough to think I gleaned some kind of awesome physical strength from this, if anything it might have just fucked up the rest of my training for this wave. I do believe though that if I can keep doing these awful things that surmount pretty much anything I’ve done before it, I can indefinitely build a mettle that gets stronger and stronger.

Looking back, when I was first starting strongman, I had to psyche myself up for daunting medleys and events because they hurt so much. It wasn’t a burn like a leg press, or a burn in the lungs from sprinting (because you can stop when you’re running and immediately find relief), but your entire body, in heat (granted), totally trying its best to not expire and implode under the ridiculous loads it is baring.

To sum this up, I will paraphrase Clint Darden like I have many times before in the past…“If during a strongman medley, you don’t sometimes genuinely question if you might actually die after or during the set, you aren’t training hard enough.”

Ah, almost forgot.

Song of the year for me. Listen if you know what’s good for ya!

This sounds awesome dude. I think you’ll get a lot more out of this than you would have by training “smart”. Great stuff.

6/25/16 - Strange pressing day. Opted for barbell pressing and it felt so comfortable that it felt uncomfortable since I’m used to log. Anyway, grabbed a PR like a son of a bitch. BW@231

Push Jerks
115x3,3,3
135x3
185x3
225x2
275x1
315x1 jeez this felt weird.
315x5 PR for barbell but I know I will get 6 in the near future if I remember to take this weight to failure again. Felt very stable with this much weight on the first day back with barbell/axle.

Standing One Arm DB Press
100x7
100x6
100x5 with right and then got a pretty nasty nerve pain in my upper thoracic/lower cervical spine. Ouch.

6/27/16- I worked extremely fast on fronts today because I wanted to challenge a variable I never really took into account and worked on diligently; super short rest times! I basically hit a weight, loaded up more, chalked up my fingers and went in for another set. Rest time was about 45 seconds for all sets.

Double Pause Front Squat (pause in hole and slightly above parallel or at, NO belt! and ATG)
135x3
185x3
225x2
275x1
335x1
365x1
385x1 woah! this is strong for me considering double pause and less than a minute rest.
drop set
365x1

Tire
700x10
700x10
700x10
700x15 8 reps were done up hill to put the tire back. SO brutal.

some abs and done.

6/29/16 - crappy conventional deads and stones. figuring out I sweat too much in the summer time here in NC to even think about doing stone work with no tacky. Deads are a PR so I must be content although all this near-650 sumo pulling, while being helpful, has kind of made me a bit too complacent with my pull.

Deads (conventional, hook grip)
135x3,3,3
225x3
315x3
405x3
500x2
550x1 easy enough
585x1 awfully slow but i had no form break down. Just need to get stronger at this is all.

Stone sttuff
180x3,3,3 all to shoulder one motions from floor
250x3,1,1 all shoulders
320x1 lap, but no shoulder, couldn’t grip the stone enough.
320x0 fail to lap. I just can’t grip the thing, my forearms are just covered in blood and sweat at this point so useless to even try.

Kind of a dud workout. Tested a bit too much. Gotta get back on the rails.

7/1/16 - Operation destroy triceps.

Close Grip Bench
45x8,8
135x3,3
185x3
225x25
185x21
135x20

Three sets did a number. Pretty awesome. All for today.

7/3/16- Work ensued today. Great day of front squats and one motions with the log. BW 231ish

Front Squats
95x3,3
135x3
185x3
225x3
275x2
335x1
365x6
365x6
365x6
365x6 had to wear a different shirt for this set. The sweat was unbelievable. Drenched!

I slightly widened my stance on front squats and it helped immensely. I 100% had 10 on AMRAP and that is a sure shot! No fucking exaggeration here! Front squat strength is great at the moment.

Log one motions (viper press)
110x3,3
160x3
210x2 biceps are bugging me, still sore from stones
230x2 felt awful
240x2 1st rep was bad second was good. fronts have me spent.
240x3 HARD. Last rep was nearly a press. Still one mot tho so that’s good. May or may not work up to something heavy on this in the future for fun. I’d like to know what I can do too, that’s always important. maxing in strongman might be a bit more critical than in powerlifting.

Barbell walks up and down hill, again. This time more conservatively (only a bit  )

Really good work in here later man! How is the humidity at your place? It is killing us in Maryland

Awful! It doesn’t feel hot when I’m walking around in it since I’m used to it here in the carolinas, but man oh man when I begin working even slightly I am leaking sweat from every freaking orifice! Hey, it makes for great training so no complaining, cause when winter comes, it’ll be time to hit some BIG numbers.

225 x 25!!! close grip!!! I ain’t seen such a thing in my gym. ever.

Not even sorta like almost

Not even like

225 x 3 close grip LOL

Yous a king

Vinny, where abouts are you in NC? I live in Lake Wylie, SC, just 15-20 mins south of Charlotte, NC where I grew up.

Strong pressing man!

I live in Denver, about 40 minutes from Charlotte! Appreciate the kind words.

Awesome!

I’ve traveled up to Denver a lot over the years to see customers. I remember driving by that private gym off 16 business and always wanting to go in there and get a lift in but never did it.

I’m assuming you’ve lifted there before, any good?

Iron Physique is a fantastic place, man. It’s one of the few places Adam Scherr (pro strongman, now WWE Superstar Braun Strowman) would train at frequently while training for the Arnold Pro and other contests.

I trained with him a couple of times there. The gym used to have some old beat up stones, a frame, some DIY circus dumbbells and a log+axle. Haven’t trained there in probably almost 2 years but it is a great place to check out!

@Spock81 well thanks lol. My regular bench is already closer than the average lifters so eh.

7/5/16 - Yoke training! Woah! Super hot today. Definitely feeling under it…in more ways than one.

Yoke
270x110’
360x110’
450x55’
505x110’ the walk was calm but the weight was a shock to the body. Not a bad start back for this movement though.
505x55’

Farmers
170x55’
170x55’
170x55’ basically sprints on all of these, felt super easy and i actually had fun

7/7/16 - BIIIIG volume PR today on push jerks. These were very difficult as the challenge to breathe was so real. First 3 sets were only 2 minute rest periods and the last two were about 6-7 minutes.

Log (out of rack)
110x5,5,3
200x3
230x1
270x5
270x5
270x5 log came down too hard and fell to my waist and I had to clean it from a hang and it took some energy out.
270x5 worst set, ended up shifting far back and had to walk the log like 9 feet back into the rack.
270x5 took off big belt and put on small one for this. No idea how I got 5 but I somehow did.

Strict Press Axle
180x10

EMOM for 10 minutes: Pause Front Squat (no belt) @275lbs x 3 reps

Tire
700x8
700x8
700x8
max reps in 60 seconds
only 12 here, I was FLYING but then I flipped it too far onto the curb and I could not get my fingers underneath it and so the pick was BRUTALLY slow and I struggled to get it to my knee. Either way, something to improve upon. I’ve always been really good at tire flips for reps/time.
