Per aspera ad astra (strongman Koestrizer)

Welcome to the worthless degrees club =D

I have a history major. I currently work in the engineering field after going to technical school for about eight months.

There are plenty to do out there if you look. Just have to hope that the field you choose is to your liking.

Definitely a road that I could go down but at the moment I am just fed up with studying and not making enough money to fully support myself. Also I just can’t see how that helps to set me up for my professional end goal.

So I have been absent for a few days because I have been in Vienna, exploring probably the greatest gym there is - Das Gym, Intelligent Strength. I was there with my gf and Wayne and we stayed in the bicep pension (the gym’s hotel room). That place is something else. Like you can see in every little detail how much love, passion and thought went into it. Those two brothers created a living dream. This is a lot more than a gym. It was a special experience for me and it motivates me to work harder on my own goals - professional and sport.

I can throw up pictures if you all are interested. Will definitely post lifting videos once I have them all collected.

First things first - my training sessions in Vienna:

26.09.

1 push press
Up to
2 @ 85 kg
1 @ 95 kg
1 @ 105 kg
0 @ 115 kg
1 @ 110 kg
0 @ 115 kg

2 viking press (very short lever arm, made the weight heavy)
up to
5 reps @2 plates per side

3 circus db
up to
1 @ 50 kg right arm

4 log lift (clean every rep)
up to
2 @ 85 kg - was spent at this point

5 bamboo bar ohp with suspended weights (estimated bar weight = 10 kg)
8 @ 26 kg
2 x 8 @46 kg
10 @ 46 kg
20 @ 26 kg

Notes:

  • 110 kg on the push press is 2,5 kg off my all time PR but I haven’t been focussing on barbell pressing at all lately, so I can’t be sad about this.
  • the bamboo bar gave me the greatest pump I ever experienced in my shoulders.

27.09. the am session

1 conv. deadlift from floor (texas deadlift bar, Eleiko comp plates)
? @ 70 kg
2 x 3 @ 110 kg
1 @ 130 kg
1 @ 150 kg
1 @ 170 kg
1 @ 190 kg - PR (+10 for from the floor)!!!
0 @ 195 kg

2 axle deadlifts with wagon wheels (just under knee height)
1 @ 124 kg
2 x 5 @ 164 kg

Notes:

  • beyond happy and relieved to finally PR my deadlift!
  • very difficult starting position on the axle deadlifts because you don’t have any momentum and it is hard to create power from there

27.09. the pm session

1 squat (texas squat bar, Eleiko comp plates, monolift)
few @ 25 kg
5 @ 75 kg
2 @ 95 kg
1 @ 115 kg
1 @ 135 kg
1 @ 155 kg

2 spider bar squats
2 x 6 @ 70 kg
2 x 3 @ 110 kg
1 @ 120 kg

Notes:

  • 155 kg is 5 kg off my all time PR and the heaviest squat of recent history. Can’t be mad about that, considering I went all out on deadlifts that morning and then spent all day walking around the city
  • liked the spider bar. It is very challenging but I see how it can be valuable in training

28.09.

1 belt squat (pit shark)
5 @ 40 kg
5 @ 80 kg
5 @ 120 kg
5 @ 160 kg
5 @ 200 kg
5 @ 250 kg
2 @ 270 kg - had the wrong foot position so stopped early. Was just having fun anyway

2 sled harness pull for close to 30 meter
250 kg + sled in 2.32. minutes.

- this was gruesome. May effort. Case of prowler flu. Loved it.

3 arm over arm sled pull with 120 kg + sled (plus backward drag)

4 Husaffel stone carry
30 meter @ 75 kg - very easy

5 GHR
2 sets with band support
5 reps @ body weight

6 failed a 110 kg atlas stone

7 CoC stuff

8 seated cable rows, tried different cool grips

9 leg press that looks like a ‘mad max’ car
2 sets, just to try it

10 ‘mad max’ standing chest press
5 x 10 with 2 plates (light)

Notes:

  • loved all the different things we tried. Also major fan of belt squats now.

I want to permanently move there! :sob:

Picture spam!! Just to give you an idea of how the main area looked like. Yes, the bar stool is made from real Eleiko plates. Yes, there is a professional posing room, with com scale, measuring tape, mirror and even a thing to hold you phone so you can take selfies. There is so much more… One needs to experience it.
This visit motivated me to work a lot harder on my own goals! Also all the people there were super nice btw.!

That is the sexiest gym I’ve ever seen

Can’t imagine a sexier one exists. They made something special there. Will definitely go back at some point.

Jesus, that sled drag looked humbling… Props for keeping on going! Also, that gym is amazing! Definitely one-of-a-kind.

Thanks man! To be honest, I couldn’t stand up for 10 minutes and my head was spinning.

01.10

1 strict press (no supportive gear)
5 x 10 @ 45 kg

2 Log lift (clean once; no supportive gear)
5 x 10 @ 55 kg

3 chin ups (10 total)
5 x 2

4 chest supported tbar row
5 x 10 @ 50 kg

Notes:

  • by now I feel pretty shit. I feel an illness coming. Will take tomorrow and likely Wednesday off.
  • 5 x 10 on log ist no fun

Just realiaed I forgot to log the session of the 30th of September, which also marks the start of my new program by Tim O’Shea.

30.09.

1 squat
5 x 5 @ 122,5 kg

2 yoke walk
3 x 20 Meter @ 155 kg
Last set in 8.39 sec.

3 farmer’s walk (had to turn on the spot at 20m, which sucks hairy balls)
40 meters @ 65 kg per hand in 22.92 sec
40 meters @ 65 kg per hand in 21.85 sec.
40 meters @ 65 kg per hand in 22.62 sec.
40 meters @ 65 kg per hand in 21.58 sec.
40 meters @ 65 kg per hand in 20.83 sec.
40 meters @ 65 kg per hand in 20.90 sec.

Notes:

  • squats felt heavy and kinda off which I reckon is a product of the amount of work I put in over the last week. Bracing was kinda difficult. I think I am still fatigued. I sleep a lot as well and have been filling up on sushi today.
  • squats + warm ups were done in 17 minutes. Was kind of in a hurry.

04.10.

I took the last two days off because I was feeling ill. Slept a lot, used the steam room and sauna, ate good and now I am back in the saddle.

1 front squats
5 x 5 @ 77,5 kg

2 back squat
5 x 10 @ 95 kg

3 car deadlift simulator
5 x 5 @ 205 kg

4a back raises
3 x 10

4b leg curls
3 x 10

Notes:

  • awful lot of volume.
  • Played with my head position on squats, liked it but remains to be seen how I’ll do things in the future.
  • car deadlifts were pretty light but on the other hand I still have regular deadlift coming up so I didn’t want to kill myself
  • did the superset in place of the programmed GHR because I don’t have one.

One set of everything:

06.10.

When life hits, it hits hard. Not feeling that good at the moment.

1 conv. deadlift
Up to
1 @ 140 kg
5 @ 160 kg

2 shrugs (doh)
3 x 25 @ 60 kg

3 bicep curls ez bar
10 @ 27,5 kg
10 @ 37,5 kg
8 @ 37,5 kg

Notes:

  • thankful that deadlift volume was so low.
  • surprised that deadlifts felt rather snappy despite the intense lower body workout from two days ago. Had some more in the tank
  • hate shrugs. Don’t like sore or pumped traps and don’t care for the feel of the bar grinding against my dick.
  • don’t care for curls either but since they are programmed, I might as well grow big arms
