Canceling Home Internet = Happier?

I had to.
money for enough food and supplements to keep up with my training, or money for internet at home?
I have internet access at work (which is how I’m typing this now) and I pay bills, order stuff, and see what you guys are up to - right from the comfort of my office chair.

Also, I never got a myspace or facebook account, because I know how compulsive I get about such things.

If I have work I need to do at home, I copy the spreadsheets or whatever to a flash drive and take it with me.

So my vote is for dropping home internet, at least temporarily, and see how your life changes, you can always get it reconnected if you need to.

I’m gonna cut the service at the end of December. That’s when my Comcast promotion ends, and my rate goes from 24.95/month to 58.95. (Internet without TV service, that is their lowest plan here) So that was the final straw. I work 2 miles away so I could go back and use a computer if I really want to, or go to a cafe.

And I’ll have plenty of opportunity to do T-Nation/email/facebook from work  I’ll even download the few shows I watch (Prison Break, Boston Legal, Curb Your Enthusiasm) once a week and throw it on my flash drive. Or music. Pr0n might be a little tricky though hehe

sweet.
I just moved to where I’m <5 miles from work, so going back real quick isn’t a problem for me either.
nearly $60 a month is ridiculous!

This is a good topic. I have thinking about ditching home internetz for a while. I keep telling myself that I need it for school, but I mainly use teh intertoobz for downloading porn, downloading music, and trolling message boards.

But mostly porn. I actually clocked my internet porn time on Monday, and I spent almost three hours watching porn, downloading porn, and jerkin’ it to porn. Hardcore.

However, there are times when I actually do use internets for something productive.

The main thing that scares me about getting rid of internets is porn. I don’t think I could function normally without porn. It runs my life. I have a ton of shit saved, so much that I actually had to buy an external hard drive JUST to store porn. It’s not like I won’t have any glorious porn, but…

What about NEW porn? I mean, I am going to miss out on all the lastest and greatest porn!

That does it. I am going to have them turn it off on Monday when I pay the rent. I wont have home porn, I mean internet, begining Monday.

I think the red flag here is when you mentioned being online makes you feel less lonely. That’s not healthy at all.

Really? I’d think that’s pretty normal. I’d compare it to going down to a bar - you dont have actual, solid relationships with any of those people, but being in a center of activity where there are peopel to talk to etc is a lot less lonely than sitting by yourself

I think for the most part as long as you replace a negative habit, or something in your life that you feel is affecting you in a negative way, with a positive habit, you will find that you don’t really miss the latter once it is gone. I have been without home internet for nearly 3 months and could care less.

Every weekend I go to my University and research different aspects of nutrition and while I’m there check my email, various forums, etc. I have internet on my phone so occassionally while on lunch at work I might read the latest Atomic Dog etc.

Instead of surfing whatever for a few hours a night, I now read for an hour or two before bed. I feel a lot more intelligent and analytical because of this simple change. I typically read one fiction and one personal improvement type book simultaneously.

I think putting equal parts emphasis on physical strength and mental strength is making me much more well rounded as a person. No one can call you a meat head when your reading the complete works of Plato. LOL.

I agree with many of the others who have posted in that technology isn’t always a good thing. Interpersonal communication has suffered immensely.

Exactly. Now if I replace it with something involving some real interpersonal communication, not only won’t I be feeling lonely, but I won’t miss it as much.

Someone suggested martial arts. I’m not sure what it’s gonna be yet, but I’m trying to think of something I can involve myself in to keep busy and get out of the house.

One idea is a big brother / mentoring program, appealing because sometimes when you focus on helping others, you don’t dwell on your own problems - it puts things in perspective.

Another idea I had was, I know a small private school here that doesn’t really offer their students any real PE class, but they have weights “in the basement” that some kids use. Maybe volunteer my time there… or what the hell, maybe just rock the fuck out on my drums…

Exactly! I think those all sound like great ideas. Maybe you could aportion some of your time towards all of them. Like you said, you have internet at work so your really not starving yourself.

If I don’t get married in the next couple of years I was thinking of becoming a big brother. If you decide to do that please offer us all some feed back on your experience(s).

do it…we need to talk more nd write more letters

Well, seeing as I have about 4 weeks to wean myself off of it, I began Phase I yesterday. I moved my laptop from my desk to on top of the TV, where I set it up with my speakers and removable drive as a music library.

I didn’t end up spending near as much time as I usually do on it yesterday. It makes it less automatic to gravitate towards the laptop when you need to stand up in front of the tv to use it. Surprising how much of a difference it makes!

I did not have internet in my home for about a month. I was actually a much more structured and organized person. If i ever needed internet i could drive to the university and get on the computers there. Call your ISP and tell them you will be on vacation for a month so that you can renew without any charges. See how you feel, if you dont like it, you can always switch back.

This is a really good thread.

I’ve thought about not being online so damn much but it’s always something I seem to put off until “next week”. Aghhh I need to get off the internet and do somthing productive.

After a while I just came to the somber realization that I was spending a good five hours in front of the laptop every night, and it was not healthy.

I know what you mean about putting it off. I used to be a huge computer geek (computers is still my “background” but when I started to adopt a healthy and more active lifestyle I began to lose interest in them. I just view this as a positive lifestyle change.

I got rid of streaming TV in the house 12 years ago. Best thing I’ve ever done.

The Internet, not so much-- it’s my lifeline and pays the bills (ie my job requires it).

x2 no tv here either. if it’s really important, I’ll go to the company website, or iTunes[/quote]

Get rid of your TV service instead. You’ll save a lot more money, too.

Actually, most of the time I just watch TV when I’m eating… and I’m not paying for it… for some reason it wasn’t turned off when previous tenant moved out  If I were paying, it would be gone, quick.
The only other time I watch TV is if I’ll download one of the few shows I follow commercial-free. Right now, that means Boston Legal (almost over) Prison Break, and 24 and Curb Your Enthusiasm when they’re back. That’s about it.

I work in front of a computer all day and it’s killing me to be on it even that long, and it’s not like I screw around on the internet that much at work (ok, a little…). After work, the computer is always kind of a crutch for me to cure boredom when I should be curing it by doing much more productive things.

I totally know where you’re coming from. Over thanksgiving I stayed off the computer pretty well, only going on it maybe a couple hours a day and only for things I needed to get done - no random internet surfing. Weird to say it but I felt a lot more like a real person…I’ve noticed that whenever I go on vacation. I’m going to be looking for a new job over christmas I think, but that might be tough with the current economy.

I’ve been laying off of it for the past day or two, and it’d made an enormous difference in the way I feel. I still have the access through the end of the month, but I made it less convenient by setting up my laptop on top of the tv (with speakers, as my music library). I feel much better not sitting in front of the computer so much, and I feel more relaxed. I actually don’t miss it much, except for some small stuff like checking weather reports, email, online deals.

It’s unreal how accustomed many people have become to automatically sitting in front of the computer all evening. I strongly suggest taking a break, you may be surprised how you feel. At least make it less automatic by doing something like I am now.

Would you really?

I doubt that. lol

I’m trying to cut down on the amount of post-work TV that me and my girl watch.

I feel that we don’t talk/hang out enough. We both work all day, then come home and sit in front of the idiot box and dont’ talk until it’s time to go to bed.

I’m sick of that.

But I have a really nice TV lol. whoops.
