Recently read Marty Gallagher's Purposeful Primitive and thought it was great. With alot of his routines he used periodization and stated he would do 3 weeks working up to a top set of 8 reps with 3 back off sets of 10 reps with about 85% of the top set, then do 3 weeks working up to a top set of 5 reps with 3 back off sets of 8 reps(again at about 85% of top set), then 3 weeks working up to a top set of 3 reps with 3 back off sets of 5 reps(85% of top set). What i was wondering is how would you work up to a top set? start low and keep doing sets of 8 til u feel u have reached a top set of 8. Also what kind of weight would you start with?

working up to a top set is the same thing as doing warm ups to a top set
