Worked Out for 4 Years, Still Skinny Fat

I completely and utterly feel you man. I have been training consistently since about 2004/2005 and have tried every type of program from your classic BB splits to dickbob’s 27x3 and am still what you’d describe as skinny fat.

Even with my most carefully planned, lean, slow bulk diet I still manage about a 4/1 ratio of fat gain to muscle. I tend to lose fat okay til I get to about 15%bf and then it’s a struggle.

In spite of my best efforts I have never been lean by any stretch of the imagination and have never had defined abs even though I appear “skinny” with clothes on.

My lifts have consistently gone up over the years and my numbers are currently sitting at 180kg Deadlift, 120kg squat and my max bench press is 80kg.

Even those the numbers are light years from where I started out (30kg bench press for about 3 reps with my shoulders hurting for weeks) it’s still frustrating watching a newbie with a few weeks in the gym put better numbers up and get better results physically in 6 months than I have in 7-8 years.

I have been on the other side of this frustration though. When I was younger I was very good distance runner but never stuck with it because I hated it. Last year a colleague of mine entered a half marathon. He ran every day for 10 months just to prepare for it. I decided to run it with him as the fella he was training with pulled out the week before due to an injury. He thought I was crazy and tried to talk me out of it because I hadn’t done any sort of running for well over a year. Imagine his anger and disbelief when I was able to not only keep up with him for the entire race but out sprint him at the end?

I can also get to level 11 of the mutlistage fitness test without any preparation. For some people getting to this level is a pipe dream no matter how much effort they put it.

For some reason lactic acid builds up very slowly when I run and I don’t get fatigued easily.

It’s the same with weight lifting, some are better suited to it that other due to bodytype, genetics etc and i’ve come to terms that I’ll never have a physique like 95% of the members on this site but I’m at the stage now for the first time in my life where people are starting to notice that I work out.

I’m not writing this post to discourage you in anyway, in fact I hope it has the opposite effect and you realise that you’re not the only one out there struggling with this dilemma.

Eating the same source of protein for every meal is not optimal for this reason. Every protein surce is only as strong as its weakest link, as in its content of specific amino acids. Vary the protein sources, which have different amino acid profiles, and have a greater more balanced pool of aminos to feed the muscles.

Eating unprocessed foods more frequently stimulates the metabolism by demanding energy for digestion while feeding the muscles more often the nutrients they need, more muscle ,less fat. U saying one meal a day is better?

Proper fats-Getting the correct ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s will have a strong effect on gene expression in the body. So u can get this, genes tell the body to produce proteins, and getting this ratio right turns on muscle building through increased protein synthesis from heightened mitochondrial activity. Also stress hormones, specifically cortisol is reduced. So ya those dont matter much huh?

first thing the ole have to eat every 2.5 hours is a myth it does not increase metabolism or have any effect on nutrient absorbtion. varying protein sources will have a miniscule if any difference at all to gains. eating processed food vs natural food has a very small difference on body compostition there is no difference eating say 400 calories wotrh of pizza vs 400 calories of rice and chicken. there are multiple natural pro bodybuilders who prep for shows eating poptarts and ice-cream.
Pretty much everything you just said is inaccurate.

Eating more frequently absolutely speeds up metabolism.

400 calories of pizza and 400 calories of chicken are night and day different lol…

Touchdown! But u were only carrying the poptarts pizza and ice cream…

Gonna be honest didn’t read all the posts, but most of the one’s I saw have pretty solid advice.

Real quick just so you know I am a CSCS with a degree in exercise science. Not trying to get into a pissing contest with anybody but to be honest I know some of what I’m going to say is gonna be contrary to some conventional wisdom.

First I would go to a upper/lower split, still 4 days a week, 2 upper 2 lower. You can train on the same days just be sure to alternate lower and upper. I firmly believe that half of your training should be lower body, right now you are training half of your muscle mass three times as much as the other half (3 days upper, 1 day lower), so I would switch to a split like I just described. 5/3/1 is good, but honestly I would look into using the Juggernaut program, it has a higher volume which I think would help you more.

For your diet, I think you are getting entirely too much protein. I have never read a study that has said you should get more than 2 grams per Kilo of body weight,(so less than a gram per pound). For somebody who is 176 if you got around 150g that would be fine. Also 4000 calories a day is probably a little excessive if you are just doing lifting and moderate steady state cardio. If you are doing heavy conditioning like prowler pushes, battle ropes, and 300 yard shuttles, then that’s probably about right. The macro nutrient breakdown I think is best is 45-65% carbs, 25-30% fat, 15-25% protein.

Wel, gotta bump everything diesel just wrote with empirical evidence.

I went to a 4 day upper /lower split and was SHOCKED at the overall gains I got while getting leaner, I posted about it about a month ago here. Glenn Pendlay lays a great one out here if u wanna look it up its called too much muscle, the glenn pendlay secret. Shit works

Also Iv tried the super high protein diets and exactly agree, when I started going over 1 gm per lb of bwt, it seemed to create negative results. I dont need a study to believe Diesels post, Iv tried it in the field and it worked.

Solid post Diesel.

no pretty much everything i just said is supported by science and practiced by alot of NATTY pros. you have yet to post a single bit of evidence to condradict what i posted. come on man i thought you liked these classes.

LOl dont need to, and like I said Im not doin ur research for you, just go chill with ur poptarts, pizza and ice cream and dont bother worrying about getting in ur high quality protein sources.

No difference in eating 400 calories of pizza versus 400 calories of rice and chicken, CLASSIC!

Saying the GI is useless, CLASSIC
Eating has no effect on nutrient absorbtion whatever time it occurs CLASSIC
Processed foods and natural foods arent processed differently CLASSIC
Having to digest fibrous veggies doesnt stimulate the metabolism LOL!

Insulin, testosterone, and estrogen have no effects on body composition either right!

Gilead, poptarts ice cream and pizza are not going to help you at this stage. Stay away from them and focus on high quality natural foods and good protein sources.

I noticed that you’re eating 4000 calories. If you’re trying to lose some BF, id drop the calories down. At 180lbs you should be cutting some calories.

Blood sugar spikes make the body produce more insulin, insulin excess over time makes you fatter!
Just keep bangin in those processed sugars man ur gona get ripped! The GI predicts the insulin response…

You referred Ian as a back-up, the kid is retarded. My English might be poor, but let me guess, you stand on the same ground as Ian right?

Everyone should calm down and stay friendly.

We are all here to learn and share knowledge.

While I 100% disagree with what Ryan is saying regarding diet, I don’t need to insult him.

Ryan, Sesumate is correct about sugar directly affecting insulin spikes. Taking in ice cream and poptarts all day is just silly. You really should only take in sugar when you need it…like directly after a workout for instance. Directly after a workout your muscles are screaming for glycogen replenishment, sugar is the answer to their screams. So yea, you could down some ice cream and poptarts immediately post workout as long as you add a solid source of protein. Personally I think I’d yack lol…instead I down 12 oz of Orange juice with two scooped of whey. But to each their own.

But honestly, take a look at all of the most successful pros’ diets…not seeing much junk food in there. They gotta be on to something right lol??? And of course they are on loads of gear, but that in noooooo way means they can eat whatever they want and achieve the same physiques. I can tell you that from personal experience Haha

Just some “food for thought”… I know I know, puns are horrible lol

^^^ This

Besides the fact that comparing someone many many pounds above their ideal lean body weight to a seasoned bodybuilder with gallops of lean mass needing calories of any kind to stay big… its a night and day discussion. The leaner you are, the better you handle carbs, the fatter you are the worse you handle carbs, especially the shitty ones like pop tarts.

did you not just see the post above you, i posted a video about why the GI is useless. " just keep banging in processed sugars your gonna get ripped" you mean like the two bodybuilders i posted who preped for shows eating processed food? im not saying base your hole fucking diet around ice-cream that would make it hard to hit your macros, but this hole OMG he ate ice cream hes gonna get fat is bullshit. do you know how efficent the body is at converting thing to glucose.

Just some “food for thought”… I know I know, puns are horrible lol
you dont see much junk food in people like IFBB pos diet simply because of food volume. the same concepts im talking about would still apply to them. but being 350 relativley lean in the of season imagine how hungry that man would be, thats the reason. dusty hanshaw was posting on the NBSB face book page a while back. he said i enjoy my soda and junk food alot, but being as big as he is he need alot more size and volume of is food.

This thread is awesome.
