Wide/Broad Hips (Male)

#1

Hey guys
Attached is a pic of me from my first competition in August. I'm 20 years old, 6'1 and weighed in at about 189 lbs. As you can see my hips are quite broad... I would like advice in how to make them look smaller or less wide. It takes away from my X-Frame and would like a better flow to my physique. Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance!

Bigger legs. Wider lats. Wider delts. Bigger Arms.

Pose better. Need to flare the lats in a front double bicep pose, not pinch the shoulder blades together.

Your hips dont look that wide. You just have love handles and maybe big obliques. But it looks like love handles mostly.

The "points" where it sticks out the most at the sides is bone.. I know I wasn't the leanest I couldve been for my first competition. Will learn to pose properly for my future competitions.. So what you recommend is actually more size overall? Thanks for the advice so far!

If your hip bones are in fact that wide, then adding overall size is the only thing you can do.

#5

Not only are your hips wide, but theyre in a weird place. Ive never seen a person with hips above the navel line.

#6

anterior pelvic tilt?

OP do you work your hamstrings and glutes as much as your quads?

#7

Don't think there's any tilt? Maybe just weird posing? Yeah I don't know about my hips hey? Maybe I haven't "grown" into them yet??

My hip bones aren't the narrowest, so I've been destroying my lats like nobody's business the last 2 years. Look at one of my recent double bicep poses and you can see how much I've been able to draw attention away from the bulkier mid-section.

Lotta close grip work, and attention to keeping stress on the actual lats and not letting the midback and arms do the work in most instances.

Not a single one of those was an actual question. Sorry, that bothers me lol.

They arent actually question but the inflection in actual speech would make it sounds like a question if that makes anysense. (ie raise your voice at the end). Sorry very bored at work today :slightly_smiling:

OP Exactly what BONES said. Wider lats, shoulder, and bigger arms makes the waist appear smaller.

I would echo Stu (which is always a good idea) in that you could probably do more lat work to make the hips look small in comparison. I have a 41" waist (im working on it) but I have a 54" chest. So it looks proportioned even if I am a fat body. Get bigger up top

Yeah I always thought my upper body was lagging a bit to my lower body! So thanks for the replies. I started doing a back specialization program focussing one day on width and the other day on thickness, so hitting back twice a week. I also thought bringing up my obliques will "fill up" my waist more, but I don't think that is the case. I'm still young so I think as I grow older my I will grow into my hips so to speak!

LOL?

I will try to upload a recent bulking pic of me relaxed later today so a better perspective can be given about my hips.. After some thought, wannabebig25's comments was right about the anterior pelvic tilt, didn't understand at first, so it looked like my hip bone was higher than the navel.

I think you should eat more.

I have a pretty wide waist and hips as well, somewhat similar to yours. What you can try to make that not as obvious:

1- Get bigger. A LOT bigger. If in 5 years you walk around at that level of leanness but 40-50lbs heavier, your waist will not seem as weird. That's what I'm currently working on.

2- Get leaner. For me, the first fat I put on after dieting is to that region, making my waist look wide as hell. So for competitions, you need to be MUCH leaner. You look about 10+ weeks out. I know it's your first show and it takes balls to step on stage, so kudos, but next time, get much much leaner.

3- Posing. Like BONEZ said, your posing isn't doing you any favors. Spend time EVERY DAY playing with posing. Watch youtube videos. Find people in real life that know what they're doing to help you. This will make the world of difference when it comes to how you display yourself on a BB'ing stage.

I would deffinitely say the lats are the biggest thing that could help this, but mostly just overall size

#19

Just something that hasnt been said because its not as important as lats for what you want, but bigger legs equals smaller hips by comparison. you have decent mass on your quads, but if you pack mass on there you'll seem to have smaller hips. Focus on the lats though

Thanks for all the advice people. Really appreciate it! Will work on the weak points
