Why These Fireballs are Different?

Why is it that when the M1A2 tank fires the fire ball looks like this?

BUT when an artillery cannon makes a fire ball like this?
Pic B

Is it the larger caliber that is causing this, or is it something with the cannon itself, or powder used???

I don’t know much about guns, but those pics are sweet!

The M1A1 uses a self-contained shell, meaning that the powder and round are one piece, it also lacks a muzzle break at the end of the tube.

Heavy artillery (155mm) does not have a self-contained shell, so the powder and round are kept seperate from each other until loaded. Also, artillery pieces have a muzzle brake. (Looks like a flash suppressor)

Also, I believe that M1A1’s and 155mm artillery uses different types of powder. And the M1A1’s are smooth bore, while the Howizters (cannons) are rifled.

The picture you have is of the Crusader, an artillery piece that the Army cancelled a few years back. The military currently uses the Paladin as its only Self-Propelled heavy artillery piece.

Here is a pic of a Paladin.

To sum up, its mostly due to the muzzle brake. The muzzle brake is to reduce recoil. They need to reduce recoil because the Paladin fires a much larger shell much further than an Abrams. So yes, it’s because the cannon is a larger caliber.

The second one is not a tank. In fact, no cannons are tanks. Common misconception, though.

There are some major differences between the two.

Sorry, I’m a artillery guy myself, and im sure any tankers on here don’t want their tanks confused with our guns.

As far as seeing them fire, its pretty cool. Even cooler is being the guy firing them from the inside.
