Why Do Humans Like to Alter Their Reality?

I’m speaking more on normal person without the baggage and just starting off. I suppose the mere stimulus of ‘fun’ is good enough. I was hoping for a philosophical reasoning but the truth is reduced to just being an animalistic one.

The only reason most kids drink is because it is off limits. If alcohol weren’t seen as taboo until over the age of 21, less people would “rebel” by drinking before then.

In France, drinking with a meal is very common long before the age of 21. The mystique is gone as a result.

Our own conservative moral brow beating has more to do with why teenagers start using drugs than there being some need to change reality.

It simply works out that many people would rather be high or drunk than sober once they are aware of the effects. You would have to ask them why specifically.

It’s legal to drink at the age of 16 in Denmark. Denmark’s youngsters are the ones who drinks the highest volumes of alchohol in Europe. Kids overhere normaly start drinking at 13-14 though…

I think it’s dumb that someone can go to war and die at the age of 18 here but they can’t drink a beer legally until 21.
Satisfaction and planned change never co-exist.

If you drink to get drunk etc, you are doing so because not doing so would be unsatisfactory for you. Even the “because it’s fun” arguments imply that life without drinking etc. isn’t fun ENOUGH which would be an example of dissatisfaction.

If one were to visit reality often enough one would understand why some people would want to alter it.

Sadly, I am convinced that what passes as reality for some people is nothing more than an illusion anyway.

I speak of your average Joe humming along through life, checking off the normal boxes.

  1. Graduate from highschool
    1B. Graduate from college
  2. Get a job
  3. Build up friendships
  4. Get married
  5. Have children

It doesn’t matter what stage you are in, most peoples lives point down the same path.

I am not talking of the person whose life is so off kilter they need other means to cope.

And we can debate the definition of reality forever, so I’ll forgo that argument for this discussion.
Who do fuck aims to be the average Joe? When’s the last time you heard a 5 year old say “I wanna be the average Joe when I grow up”? , being the average Joe means you failed. even though you probably did a better job than the average loser.
And if you stay average that means your on a decline because of inflation and the rich get richer. Comfortable gets more comfortable, your wife has a kid can’t find time to give you quality sex, despite all the force, begging and every other alternative method you tried. You’ve used up all porn sites and randomly came across the perfect woman to cheat with, but now she’s in love. Your wife finds out and now half your check goes to her even though she makes more than you because your average joe job of the past is computerized.

You find out your freaky mistress is dumb as fuck, can’t cook, clean, a horrible mother and kept forgetting to take the pill. Now you have another baby on the way, a lower salary, and half your check going to your other wife, your first kid is acting up in school and the mistress sex is wack now. Wouldn’t you want a drink?

I already did, and it was my final conclusion; very simple, I agree.

Well the human beings naturally have the instinct to try new things.WE are the most curious animal and at the same time most intelligent…In a world in wich there isn’t much to discover and everything comes readily for us do absorb…We don’t get to satisfy our insticts…In a world where the need to survive is at zero and our bodies and minds don’t get stimulated but just stressed we need actvities that provide enough stimulus and make things funnier and more animalesque. Weight lifting and sports in general are a manner to express our desire to move and actually use our bodies. And drugs just like other activities are a manner of stimulation and they do relieve stress and negative emotions and give us new experiences.
Cheers Guys…

  you me
  1. Graduate from highschool 1.Graduate from highschool
1B. Graduate from college 2.Fuck college
  2. Get a job 3.Get laid off after 6 years
  3. Build up friendships 4.Burn my bridges
  4. Get married 5.Get seperated after a 10 year relationship
  5. Have children 6.My wife had 2 miscarraiges.\

There’s actually a halfway decent explanation (evolutionarily speaking) why people like alcohol.

Without any guarantee of food, eating (and sometimes overeating) calorically rich foods increases your chances of survival. So the people who sought out such foods were more likely to survive and reproduce (blah, blah, blah). Really ripe fruit, as opposed to unripe fruit, has more available calories. A slight amount of fermentation often occurs in the ripest of fruits, and therefore slight amounts of alcohol could be considered a good sign of ripeness. Throughout the animal kingdom, from elephants to songbirds, everyone seeks out fermented fruit - quite possible because it’s a good indication that fruit is calorically dense.

Of course, with the advent of agriculture - particularly the domestication of barley and grapes - this evolutionarily advantageous trait suddenly in because a something of a liability.

I seem to recall reading something about this in Discover magazine like 10 or 15 years ago, and I’m pretty sure it’s a valid explanation - but I could be wrong.

As far as other fun things (like herb and LSD) go, I have no idea why people do them. Except they’re really fun.

i’m drunk now and this thread kinda makes me feel like a failure lol.

no i’m not an alcoholic. it’s our senior week so were drinking all the time and enjoying no responsibilities.

i feel like so far i’ve been following the average joe life. graduated high school, graduating college, getting a job.

what should i do? i’m happy with this life. for me it’s not the major things i do like what the op listed, it’s the little things that define who i am. partying with my friends, lifting weights, chasing the ladies, just having fun with the people around me.

to address the op yeah i alter my reality. i drink(especially this weeek), smoke pot when not job hunting, and i’ve chewed a handful of times. i’ve had some great times doing those things that i’ll remember forever(and some i’ve already forgotten). the ‘altered reality’ allows me to do things i wouldn’t normally do. for example i get nervous when people see me dancing but i like to dance, so getting drunk and dancing is a blast.

i think i’m happy with my average life of fun plus a sometimes altered reality. i handle my shit though, i’ve gotten go grades in school and i just got a great coop(i start monday btw)

I read a psychology article stating that the main human goal in life appears to be to reach an altered level of reality. Your body produces a chemical reaction much like addiction to a drug when it falls in love. when u eat chololate the same thing happens. when you work out your body produces it’s own version of morphine. the human body exists in a reality created by chemical reactions.

Therefore, why would it be weird that we would choose to induce a chemical feeling of any sort as long as we were convinced that it wouldn’t be detrimentative to our long term survival and success?

When in love your brain releases a lot of feel-good hormones that are closely related to sexuality and comfort like serotonin …This causes adiction to the feeling of being with one specific person…
cheers…

Sometimes a single day can feel like a week in hell. It’s not my reality that sucks. It’s the reality others thrust upon you that drags you down. So it’s easier to block it out than trying to kill everyone else.

Oleena, I have to agree. First and foremost we are chemical beings. Everything of and related to the body is chemistry including our thoughts and feelings, etc. Altering our chemistry is altering our reality…and it is fun.

my answer

because, deep down, there is something fucking annoying about life.
something universal

Is there a way to act and feel the way you want, without mind altering drugs?
