Who Works a Good 8 Hour Day
Field wrote:
If im going to work some random job that i dont have a personal fulfillment vendetta with, why on earth would they think that its healthy or balanced to work 11-12 hour shifts 5 days a week?

Even if im not doing anything extremely meaningful with the extra free time i would have, I would rather just HAVE that time for myself to do what i want rather than being at some job that i dont necessarily care about.

Population density is increasing all the time , there is no shortage of people that will work with zest on any sh1tty job thats available.

The earth is going to keep on spinning regardless of how many jars of peanut butter you box up and send out , or how many granola bars get produced at the factory, or how accurately you inventory the supply of spa shirts at the supply warehouse.

Work/play/sleep . Its like a triangle. Is it wrong to just want a triangle that is even on all sides ?
It’s not wrong but it’s not realistic… The earth is also going to keep spinning whether or not you are alive. Does that mean go shoot yourself? No. Do what you need to do to get the job you care about. I don’t know anything about working that many hours, and I would probably be pissed If had to too. But from what I have heard from others who are full-time members of the work force, 55-60+ work weeks are becoming all too common. At least it’s not China, and you aren’t forced 18+ hour work days, fed methamphetamine, and witnessing suicides all around you(in some cases these conditions have been reported as normalcy, from what I have read. But, then again, I do tend to stick to the fine publication, “The Liberal Pinko Commie Faggot Times”, so my information may or may not be a little skewed. Grain of salt.).

What exactly is the standard work week in europe?

lol

Who are “they”, exactly? And what do you mean by “healthy and balanced”? The whole reason people work is to make money right? Unless you do have some sort of personal vendetta (work for yourself, have your own business, work in a business that you want to take over some day, ect.) Seems to me like the answer to your question is right in front of you. The whole reason people pull 12 hour shifts is to feed themselves, support a family, keep the lights on in the house. Duh. You do it because you have to do it.

BTW, just get used to it, get used to working all the damn time, get used to working on your days off, this is life, you never stop. They key is to build your own empire, start goals just like you do when you train, and make a plan to achieve those goals. (A goal without a plan is just a dream) Start your own business, their is no better way to live. It’s like my dad says, most of the time it’s not even the smart people who make it rich, its the people with the balls to stick their neck out for something they have faith in. They made a plan, took it to the bank, and pulled the loan money. Pretty simple. And sometimes you will fail, and sometimes you will succeed. Just keep trying until you get something that sticks. It take huge balls yes.

How many salaried employees actually work 37 hours a week though?

Here it’s 37.5. I put in 45 on a slow week, since January it’s been closer to 60. That’s using time-tracking software, not an estimate.

Standard working week here is 38-39.

Only in some cases that have already been mentioned(running business, higher end management, hoping to take over business etc) have I seen people do much over that every week. 8 hours work, 8 hours sleep, 8 hours play.

Seems like a pretty even triangle to me. However this has only been the case in jobs that I’ve worked in/jobs that family or friends have worked in. Obviously there are exceptions to everything.

I retired for 3 days. Didn’t like it. Took another job for 30 hours a week. It wasn’t enough. Found another job to take up the extra 10 hours I needed to make it a 40 hour week. Because my old job was always 50-60 hours a week, this still feels like retirement. I have a lot of outside interests that I can still pursue along with my “easy” 40 I put in now. When you grow up working hard, you can’t just turn it off. I think that kills a lot of people. I will cut it down to 30 when I’m 70, 20 when I’m 80 and if I make it to 90, then I might kick back awhile (but probably not).

To OP

“Population density is increasing all the time , there is no shortage of people that will work with zest on any sh1tty job thats available.”

What are you ging to do if you don’t work a shitty job? sit on your arse and get supported by other people?

Do you know what to do if you don’t like your shitty job?

Find what you want to do. Get qualified to do it. Do it.

There are lots of people who want to do the shitty jobs. I’m one of them, I’d rather earn my money.

I know what I want to do. I study full time and work full time in McDonalds. I fucking hate it. But its a job.

I think you need to man up.

I just looked at some statistics. In 2007 the average full time employee worked for 37.3 hours each week.

I work about 50 - 55 hours most weeks but, some weeks go up to 60 hours usually not over that amount. I get about 2 weeks vacation - take sick days when needed - usually about 4 a year maybe as many as 6. I get about 5-7 holiday days off so overall not too shabby.

My commute makes it a longer work week but, I can get some personal stuff done at work (not alot but, I can research purchases, insurance, set appointments etc). I work my ass off and I get the job done and done right the first time. Pressure and deadlines are high. Working out and staying fit is a constant battle but, mandatory for mental and physical heatth. Work hard = play hard.

Don’t slack on fun, love and sex. Enjoy life to the fullest - a job can be like a hobby - like your favorite thing to do. There is always someone out there who will take your job from you of you do not want it/ earn it.

Having worked in agriculture, and construction my whole life, I don’t think I’ve ever had one single 8 hour work day. I don’t really understand why you’d want one though. About the only jobs I know of that involve an 8 hour shift are factory jobs, and Jesus god if you’ve got one of those I have no doubt that even an 8 hour day would be too dambed long. Go do something else with your life.

Haha try moving to the middle east.
I work 12 hours per day 6 days a week with a 30 minute break for lunch. The commute to work takes an hour each way. When I get home I have to cook dinner, prepare lunch for the next day (no canteen), do the laundry then straight to bed, where I count down my precious few hours of sleep.
I’ll also add:

-Highest male to female ratio in the world. The few women that are there are either completely covered up or married.

-No alcohol. Enough said

-No gyms. Everyone’s a fat tub of shit.

-No Porn!!! Although there are ways around that.

-Some of the worst traffic in the world.

-Loud prayers at 4.30am

-Hottest place on earth

-Terrible shit infested food. (literally, they wipe their arses using their left hands with no toilet paper) Have been throwing up with stomach pain since I got here.
And also I’m only fucking 23!!!
Sorry for the rant. Welcome to hell.

horrible! Where are you exactly? How long have you been there?

I used to work with a guy (former MP) that went to work for a building contractor doing jobs in Afganistan. Left in 2005. Yes, he had some screws loose. (Hope he’s OK now that I think about him).

Gota be Saudi? Either that or Iraq.

Im just going to be honest and say that i just want an easy job that pays ok and doesnt suck up all of my waking hours .

Something like a gas station attendant or a cashier at Rite Aid, or maybe a job at the super market .

Yes i realize that sounds pathetically unambitious, but i just havent really found anything that i give a good sh1t about to want to make a career of.

The one job ive worked so far that payed good money was as a maintenance mechanic , but for the 2 years that i did it i wondered …how ‘fun’ is your job supposed to be ? This type of work was pretty dry and really didnt turn me on that much.

In my opinion , just learning stuff at college was probably the funnest and most meaningful thing i have done so far. I think i really just like …learning stuff …and …being ‘in the know.’ Lol.

I went ahead and got a fitness trainer certification but since i dont have any related degree or credentials to go with it im not sure how easy it would be to get a job with anyone . That and i just dont feel, legit- to my–self … just trying to be some random a$$ deuche trainer person without any papers to show that i am smart…If you understand where im coming from.

I want to go back to school but i dont really have any money, so the only way to really get anything done is i just need to do more work. A few people told me i should just get some student loans but my mom says ‘fk that sht.’

Dont take me wrong, people say i am a very hard worker on tasks that dont require tons of thinking or scheming.

I worked for a temp agency for a while and made some green but they pretty much always send you out on assignments where you are working sh1tty 12 hour shifts with some garbage-trash type of job, some of them were ok , but srsly the last job i did where i spent a couple weeks in some big warehouse pulling stuff out of boxes and counting stuff all damn day , that pretty much sucked all of the try-hard out of my soul. It was like death, it took away all of my try-hard.

Pay & benefits are very good for my age. Everything is provided for me except for food.
Money is tax free so it all goes into my pocket once I buy my groceries.
Lifestyle is absolute hell though. Will do my “sentence” for a year and get out.
