Who’s Going To Break The Raw Deadlift Record?

Both true. I was thinking less that a grip issue that means it’s a weight he couldn’t hold, and more than using straps generally makes deadlifts, particularly sumo, easier through a slight increase in ROM and just through better confidence. Was basically saying Cailar’s was even more impressive than the face value weight differential. Im expecting Yuri to hit 435 (or at least attempt) in his next meet, having tried and failed it twice. I think Cailar will go a touch higher.

I pull sumo and straps make my deadlift feel significantly worse.

I don’t see Yury beating Cailer on deadlift any time soon, but overall he’s a better lifter. His best squat is about 260lbs more than Cailer’s and bench is 55lbs more. Cailer is basically a deadlift specialist with a decent squat and bench, Yury is the best overall.

No doubt whatsoever. Their totals arent in the same ballpark.

Tbh feels like Belkin deadlift hasn’t moved much for a while. I dunno if he was focusing squat more or the heavier weight class hurt his pull but feels like he is still at the same albeit high level from a while ago

Bit harsh on Cailer. Dude is number 3 all time raw behind Kev oak and dan green and gaining on them and number 10 all time comparing that raw total vs raw with wraps totals in his weight classes. If anything it’s more accurate to say his squat is decent and his squat with wraps is shite

I very much think he focused his squat and bench to really nail the ATWR total. We think of him as a deadlifter but he has the ATWR squat lol. Id like to see him refocus deadlift, and he’s definitely showing more heavy deads recently, but he’s gonna have his own goals so I guess wait and see. I think he wants a big total at BD though.

I think he wants to WIN BD. Or at the very least podium.

This Big Dogs I honestly have no fucking clue what the podium will look like, but I think Belkin has about as good a shot as anyone there of making it. I don’t think there’s a clear favourite going in like the last three: no Malan, no Petras.

The ex-IPF dude looks like a monster though, and I know everyone in Aus is talking about Dylan H as well. I think Dylan’s big disadvantage is that he isn’t very experienced and I can imagine it’s a cauldron up there.

I don’t think Odell will win unless he as a perfect day, but he will make his presence felt in the fight for podium for sure. He always does. I’d have loved to see him go against Malan. I’m not sure if Doyle is coming, but if he is there’s another dude who will be in the running to podium.

What I do think for almost certain is that we won’t see ATWR single lifts unless someone there isn’t concerned about their total as much as setting a lift record.

I feel this belongs in the BigDogs4 thread but ok.

I love Belkin but I don’t think he gets better than 3rd here here unless enough peeps bomb or have really bad days. Odell might get hurt but I don’t see DH or graham hicks messing up never mind the other guys who could out total Belkin.

DH has had steady progress since his first meet though and kept it going solid through Big Dogs and ProRaw comps where there was plenty of pressure and expectation. I think he can get the win being slightly conservative. Going for the ATWR total definitely big risk and anything could happen.

With no bombs or off days he finishes 6th is my guess.

Thats no disrespect to Belkin, hes a relative lightweight competing with guys nearly double his mass (ok maybe +50% but still mental). He walks around 110, DH is coming in at 170ish. Yuri is, in my mind, the best pound for pound powerlifter in the world without exception, but I don’t see a podium in the heavyweight show.

You’re right, and wrong. I checked on openpowerlifing and he’s actually #1 in the raw 220s. Looking at his bench, it’s actually in the same range as the other top guys, I’m just used to seeing guys like Hoornstra benching 600+ at that weight. His squat is a bit behind, but he more than makes up for it with his deadlift. He still cant come close to Yury even if he wore wraps, 2085 total vs. 2350, no wraps are going to add 300lbs. Makes me wonder why Yury doesn’t do a meet without wraps and take his record.

Yeah, his total is 19th overall. If he can gain some weight and add 100 or so lbs to his total then he has a good chance, but otherwise it isn’t happening.

I dunno. Knees explodin

He squats without wraps in training. Even if he’s getting 100lbs out of the wraps it would still put him over 150lbs ahead of Cailer.

Relevant update.

Jamal browner looks to have fixed his grip issues with hook.

A quick 424kg / 935lb.

When he does it in comp I’ll believe it lol. Wishing him the best with this because if it clicks he’ll be right up there in the running for Benni’s ATWR powerlifting deadlift

Agreed. Looks legit with hook, I was always skeptical before because he was 900+ with straps, and only in the 800’s in comp. Hook really is a game changer if you can figure it out it seems. I still cant.

On the noodle bar the grip is insane because the bar is already a little thinner. Just keep trying man. Just hit some singles and doubles with hook during warm ups and over time your thumbs will go numb and you’ll get better with the technique of setting hook. All the while you keep pulling mixed or straps so nothing really lost

Im always torn about trying this. The pro is im convinced this would work to condition my thumbs over time, when I had grip issues a few years ago when I started PL its exactly what I did with my regular grip, use it through warmups until it stops working then switch to straps.

The hesitance comes from the idea that if im using hook grip for my warmups, then Im not getting the same grip training I used to, which might impact my currently rock solid grip if hook isnt quite there yet by the time I have to pull something big.

Is grip an issue for you with mixed?

IMO Do like three reps max with hook per set. the rest mixed or double over. Do longer holds at the top of your heavier sets to offset grip work?

It doesn’t take long with the right exposure. I think for me I started using hook when I started sumo pulling. Took two months I think and from there it’s about maintaining the skill and thumb conditioning

Not anymore, I want it to stay that way though.

You’re right though, I keep putting it off, but im actually going to suck it up and start just pulling my warmups hook.

Tbh I’m kinda in same boat. I need to build hook back up since the back injury. Have been over reliant on straps.

May as well build up my mixer while I’m at it. Feels dogshit compared to proper hook for sumo tbh. Might be a nice back up. Not sure where my max grip strength is at with mixed.
