Why do you think that there needs to be a strong Presidential nominee in order to win a clear majority in the House and Senate?

Because of the phenomenon known as “Coat tails”.
When you have a strong candidate running the inclination of the typical voter is to simply click the entire party line.
If we somehow stumbled into Gingrich as the nominee we would absolutely not win the Senate and could possibly lose the House. That’s one reason that Romney will be good for the Republicans in the fall. While we may not (probably won’t) beat Obama at least he’s strong enough to keep Obama from having coat tails.
