What...The F**k...Happened?

I don’t see any problem with guys like Christian Bale(Batman), Gerard Butler(Leonidas), or Hugh Jackman(Wolverine) being the current era of the type of physique an action hero should have.

These guys are around 6’2" so they seem slimmer than they really are seeing they are all around 220lbs.

Now if you are around average height going for the look of Leonidas is going to put you as a significantly smaller and less impressive man.

But if you are as tall as these guys going for a solid 210 to 230 lbs might not make you win any bodybuilding shows but will have you at a size that women admire and men respect. And also a size that most likely required some serious effort in the weight room and the kitchen.

It’s true, if you asked for the average (non-lifting) woman’s male ideal it is more fitness model than beast. However, since the majority of people are sedentary individuals who don’t come close to either ideal, and the closest the average woman gets to seeing an ideal physique is in the media, it is hard to say whether women have been influenced towards this ideal by it being the one predominantly presented in the media, or whether the ideal is more presented in the media because it is the one women most prefer.

This is confused by the fact that in many cases the lean/cut physique is the easiest one to present… Theuof made the point that there aren’t a lot of impressively built actors… I think the reason for this is fairly simple. The best actors are in the business for their acting, not their physique. When they take on a role where an impressive physique is part of the character, they usually have to get trained into it… And while you can get pretty much anyone cut in a relatively short space of time with the right preparation, a beastly physique takes a lot more time, effort, and dedication than your average actor has available to prepare for their next big movie role. Really, most no one will be able to do this for a movie role - it is too long term a project for that. The actors who have the beastly physiques have them because they have cultivated them outside of their role as an actor, not because of it. The combination of talent and dedication in both the physique and acting areas are a rare combination and methinks requires something of a driven individual.

And youngguns35… I can’t help but think that if the IT professionals behind the latest Conan video game are like many of the IT professionals I know, they never seen the inside of a gym, and often don’t have much of an idea of what a real woman looks like, let alone a real man (which may explain why many of their computer-generated men look like ken dolls and their women have breasts with the orientation and rigidity of a pair of cantelopes stuck to their chest). No offense intended to any IT professionals who frequent this site… since by being here they are obviously an exception to the rule;).

Yep they did…

Mark Twight set out to make guys who (1)“looked” like the live from the earth and (2) were able to do all the fighting u see the in the movie.

stop by gymjones and Mark Twight’s site and read up about what their goal was for 300.

Here is a vid of the Captian, the guy was not even able to DL 205lbs (at 210lbs BW) when he started the program.

The Spartans were hardcore soldiers but in the end died out because of unwillingness to change…

MMA fighters look like skinny bitches

I don’t know if anybody has played ninja gaiden black for the old xbox, but ryu was one video game character with a nice physique. His arms and legs were huge, and if whoever did the animations for that guy, did an excellent job.

Matthew Bryniarski happens to be an exception to most actors. But as one stated above, this is the sort of guy who was into getting jacked before he got into movies. The guys who are truly jacked got their roles in movies because they were jacked and happened to act well, or maybe OK. The others were just really talented actors, not guys who had a priority of getting jacked.

Call me sexist. I do not care. I love women. Women ALWAYS want to be fashionable, and they usually take on whatever is fashionable at the time in terms of conduct, dress, what type of man they want to date, fuck, or marry, and so on. I do not mind this. Mother nature wired them this way. They are security seeking creatures and this is why they behave the way do, similar to the way many men are a bit insensitive, volatile, competitive, and do not quibble about the minor details of tasks. Women adapt. Men are task oriented, women are emotionally loaded. If all of the sudden, every advertisement, movie, and sitcom featured buff meatheads, we would see a lot of women changing their tune. I do not care if this sounds insulting.

I have a friend who dated the sister of a very well known IFBB pro (no name dropping here). She grew up meeting other IFBB pros. My friend once bulked up to a bodyweight of 250, natural, although quite high in bodyfat but with a huge amount of muscle. She LOVED it! When he trimmed down to a ripped 220 (again, natural), she said he was too small! This guy was 5’9" and 220 natural and she said he was small! She was influenced by what she was exposed to all of her life, 250 to 300 pound beasts.

The bad guy / first boss from the game was massive, too. Ninja Gaiden 2 in less than a month!!!111111111111

Agreed on all counts. Nice post.

Some sentiments and thoughts… a lot of girls I know really don’t care for the large, incredibly-muscular look, but want a guy that knows he can take care of himself physically. I think once a girl becomes familiar with the lifestyle, the less they realize that muscles aren’t something to be looked down on, or scoffed about.

@ Bricknyce, I agree with just about everything you say. I know it’s repeated over and over around here, but it takes a special kind of person to do what we do. We have to really CARE about our love for the sport / lifestyle. As far as women are concerned, once they’re exposed to the dedication and discipline that it takes to do what we do, they respond favorably to it, because again most women I know like a man who’s confident, self-assured, and knows what he wants and how to get it. Bodybuilding is obviously a huge confidence boost, and translates over in to day-to-day activities. Since I’ve started my journey, I’ve seen my social life become less dependant on superficialities, seen my grades and work ethic improve, and many other factors that just can’t be written down in a training book or told to others that don’t understand it.

For those of us that are enlightened, we can try to preach the word, but self-actualization comes through hard work and true soul-searching, which are things that I think bodybuilders go through every time we step into the gym.
Great points. Well, right now, I only really deal with women who are fitness minded or who love a guy with a great body and put up with what it takes to attain such a physique. Actually, some woman just responded to my Match ad yesterday and she has a screename “Gym Junkie…”. I would like to enter a natural show next year so I do this because I truly love it! And yes, bodybuilding has taught me many lessons that I have applied to other areas of life. Success in one area begets success in other areas.

I agree with this. In 300, the soldiers looked gritty. They had beards, stubble, blood and sweat. This is another reason I didn’t like the movie Troy. Even though Pitt was in good shape, he was just too much of a playboy to be taken seriously.

Find a woman who is supportive of your goals.

Thats the only answer.

She used to say bodybuilders were disgusting.

Now she thinks Frank Mcgrath is good looking.

Sure, thats some competition for me ;}

But the point is her views are changing as she is more accustomed to what I like it. She’s supportive of me, and my goals, no matter what…and thats what you need.
Dude, as long as she ain’t butt-ugly, you are one lucky guy.

I hate to break it to you, but Bodybuilding never has, and never will be mainstream. Even in the 70’s and 80’s, in the time of Pumping Iron, the rise of Sly and Arnie, and “pro” wrestling, bodybuilding has always been an outsider sport, and has always had a lot of stigmas attached to it.

Don’t lose any sleep over it.
I LIKE that, i would prefer it not be mainstream… i mean shit, the competitions would be a hell of a lot harder!

I like being more muscular than the average bear.

Plus we don’t have Abercrombie and Fitch over here in England, nor do many eat grits or granola… BUT i think you are getting on the functional training bandwagon thing with the 300 sessions etc…
I mean, when i watched that movie, i thought-good movie, good effects. Done. I knew that the abs and pecs were enhanced digitally. As much as i wanted to BE one of the greek spartans - i also wanted to be a vampire in bram stokers dracula… it didnt mean i went out trying to seduce virgins… Uh… well there were those few times

Anyway, its like the fight club workout, or 300 workout or casino royale workout… Bollocks… i am not gonna go into what works and doesnt here as i would be preaching to the choir, but we know what doesnt. Fads dont work. Dietary or fitness fads dont work.

I basically agree with you, but i wouldn’t go telling anymore people that you did the 300 workout and wanted to be an “ultimate fighter” lol

Agreed with everything above. Besides you gotta ask yourself; do you really want the average guy or gal to be interested in bodybuilding? Look at american football. Those guys are real athletes, but the average 30 something year old man whos into football is a fat lazy couch potato (Not to say they all are). Who wants supporters like that?

Just do the things that make you happy and you’ll find women who want nothing more than a guy who’s content with who he is.

To the OP, who gives a shit how big an actor in a movie is or how small a model on a gaybercrombie and bitch bag is? If you are muscular and in shape, you look even better when you are more ripped up than movie stars. Girls don’t dislike muscular guys, but one thing they hate is insecurity.

If you spend all your time worrying about how other people look and whether or not your bicep grew a quarter of an inch, you are probably insecure… And, no offense intended, there is a difference between big and muscular and fat and I’m not sure everyone knows the difference.

Bottom line, if you have a good personality, are confidant, and aren’t ugly or carrying 25% bodyfat (sorry but girls still like good looking guys), then you will have no trouble getting a girl.

She’s nothing that even resembles ugly.

Very attractive.

A woman worth having is one whose supportive of you, assuming your not a selfish cunt.

Chitown makes a good point.

Don’t be insecure. Woman are disgusted by that. When I was a fatass I still never had a problem pulling girls cuz I’m a cocky son of a bitch.

i never said i had a problem getting girls dude.

and why does everyone keep talking about “300 were supposed to look like soldiers” wtf man i never said they werent. i never said any of these people arent supposed to be the way the director or whoever wanted them to be. my problem is the masses of people who all of a sudden want to be like that and just think theyre huge.people thought bradd pitt in fight club was fucking jacked…guy looks like he just came out of addicts anoynmous and people are talkin about “damn hes mad jacked yo”.

my original point was about how everyone stopped caring about what big and powerful is and started wanting to be a legion of Abercrombie clones.

maybe i shouldnt care, cause abercrombie kids can make fun of me, and i can make fun of them, but only i can do it to their faces and not worry about anything.
