What is Canada Like?

oh and i hear canadians don’t lock their doors, that’s just weird to me

Yep. Especially in bigger cities like others have stated. I’m sure there are more differences between NY and LA than NY and TO, for example.

A friend of mine locks his door…while he’s at home…while company’s over. I find that completely nutty.

I’ll lock my door when I go out and nobody’s home. Locking it otherwise never occurs to me.

To echo other posters, there aren’t that many differences between Canadians and Americans. There are probably just as many differences between people from one part of the country to another, especially Quebec.

From my experience living in different provinces I can say:

BC has more filthy hippies than others
Alberta has more rednecks than others
Saskatchewan has more socialists than others

Edit

That thing about not locking doors is complete crap. A lot of people were wondering how many doors Michael Moore had to try before he found enough for that segment. Then again, maybe it’s more common in out east than west.

I and everyone I’ve known or visited locks their door unless they’re real close to it. Doesn’t matter if your at home, with company, whatever.

And Torontonians are Liberal-Socialst cry babies.
Quebec also has more smokers then any other place on earth! Tabarnac! (probably not true, but anybody who has been to Quebec knows what I’m talking about)

I’d say Canadians are a bit more temperate, sometimes to a fault. Where in other countries (ex. France) there would be protests, road blocks, etc. here it probably won’t go beyond the standard bitching and whining over a Timmies. We’re apologetic, again sometimes to a fault. I’m thinking of a couple of cases where surgical instruments were left in patients (in one case it was an airport metal detector that discovered it). In the US it would have been lawsuit city. Here, not so much. While I hope we never become as litigious as the US has become, it is a check and balance on the system that is missing here. Again, I think moderation is the key and possibly both countries are a little too far off the middle path. (See, possibly - how Canadian of me - not really taking a position.) While I think it goes to extremes, the song “Far Too Canadian” by Spirit of the West captures this nicely.

Our gun laws are way more restrictive than most states, and while I’m not suggesting that we should go to concealed carry permits or anything like that, there is something culturally going on in a place where the laws of the land make it difficult or illegal for a citizen to protect themselves. And this goes whether I’m at a bank machine at night or in my own home.

Finally, we are less outwardly patriotic. I love my country, I am proud to be Canadian, but July 1st was just another day in many ways. Took a little time to think about what being Canadian meant, but certainly did not celebrate it. I don’t think a lot of people probably spent the day much differently.

Obviously not, or else I wouldn’t find it strange when people lock their doors.

I actually was referring to the post from the American, and also to that segment in the Michael Moore movie which led to a few Americans actually believing it.

If you had the minorities that come into my work place and fuck everything up, I’m sure that welcomed would become tolerated really fucking fast.

please elaborate…

Here is a very well done piece by NBC during the Vancouver Olymics:

Shows some of Canada’s beauty.

One thing that sucks about Canada is the cost to do cool shit. Example: Some friends of mine went on a golfing trip to the Carolinas last winter. Five days of golf, hotel, two rounds per day with a cart. Breakfast and lunch provided each day. Hotel, the works. Mind you they had to drive down there. Cost?..$700!

I don’t travel much but that seems super fuckin’ cheap.

FTR…my perception of Americans has really changed since I started to fart around on these threads…for the better

That’s odd to me. I never, ever lock my door when I’m home. Only before bed. But if I’m just chilling out at home watching TV, it’s unlocked. My friends are mostly the same way. This is all in crowded ass NJ.

Well, we do put up with a lot of your shit, so there might be something to that.

I work in the meat department of a food lion which because of its location the majority of its customers are black and the majority of them are assholes. Since I’m the new guy a big part of my job is to put out the lunch meats (bacon, hot dogs, sandwich meats, etc) so this is where most of my customer interaction comes from. Most of the time people will come in dig through stuff and just throw product all over the place into areas with different products, the ground, and even onto the shelves on the aisles that are across from where the market is. Not to mention the people that bury frozen food under the products where I work so they end up thawing and having to get thrown away plus the worst are people that stick their fingers into ground beef packages so they get thrown away too.

Not to mention having their little shit kids run around screaming and knocking random shit over added with belligerent dicks that want to argue over pricing after you tell them you can’t do anything about it. There is a acceptable level of douchebagery that you have to deal with in a retail environment put at some point you cross it. At the end of the day it takes every fiber of my being not to throw one of these cunts down and ear rape them.

I’m still waiting for you to explain how this is strictly a minority thing and not just asshole people (ftr people ARE assholes. Especially when they don’t have to clean up after themselves. I worked a booth for charity a couple times at Darlington Speedway before/during/after a couple Nascar events and those people are some of the most belligerent rude condescending pieces of trash to walk the Earth.

Where you and I draw the line of decency and respectability gets thrown on the ground with the rest of their trash. But yet nary a minority is to be found. Trust me I get what you’re saying, but skin color has nothing to do with it. Just because the majority of people who shop at your Food Lion happen to be black does not mean that white people wouldn’t act the exact same way given the same environment.)

PS I apologize in advance if this breaks down into a race debate. So for the sake of avoiding that
