# Weirdest Thing Said at the Gym

``````A kid I used to go to high school with went to the same gym as I used to.  He took one or two exercise science classes as an undergrad so he thinks he knows what's he's doing.  He usually is there with his friends telling them how to lift a weight so that 'it tones you' instead of building too much muscle.
``````

So over the summer I’m there, and I’m dumbbell rowing. The gym I’m working out at only has db’s going up to 115, so I’m stuck with using those for sets of 10. After I complete a warmup set with something like the 75s or something he comes over and we have this exchange:

Dude: “why would you lift that much weight?!?!”
Me: “It was just a warmup…was my form bad?? I was watching it in the mirror and it looked fine”
Dude: “It was fine…I just mean…why would you want to lift that much weight?”
Me: “Wh…what do you mean?”
Dude: “Why would you want to be that strong??”
Me: “fuckin A dude…” walks away

I just remembered that exchange today for some reason. What’s the weirdest thing someone’s said to you at your gym, or about working out in general?

I always hate when someone comes up and is like, ‘woah huge weights let me watch you lift it’ I try to explain to them its pathetic weight and that everyone hers just sucks in the nicest way possible but they don’t listen. So I akwardly do my set and then they leave.

“Whey protein is just like steroids.”

I think it should be legal to hunt people for stupidity.

Oh, so you do rows with 115.

Gotcha.

? I weighed about 183 at the time with probably the lowest bf % of my life. I would hope I was rowing the 115s

Did you try using barbells?

yeah, I like doing both DB and BB rows though, DB rows are probably one my favorite exercises ever though so I try to do them almost every back workout. BU’s gym isn’t much better, they only go up to 120.

i was talking to one of the trainers at the gym and about how a new gym was going to be opening and this one would be closing etc. and i was like yeah but its not gonna be for a while so i was like fuck it ill sign up now

and hes like yea dude its not opening for atleast 8 months and you could put on like 40lbs of muscle by then

…yea

it was only weird because he was trainer.

I was DLing 300 for reps and some older guy came up to me during a break and said, “That stuff will shrink your balls man”. This was at my gym back home… the typical tard gym for the most part.

All I could do was laugh… cause at my schools gym we have a few pretty strong guys who do my max for reps:/

lmfao@ “that stuff will shrink your balls”

theres no way he could have been serious

“Doesn’t creatine make you go “roid ragin” like Arnold?”

Yep, I swear by God some “soccer dad” wearing crocs said that to me back in July. Only in a perfect world would I have been allowed to chokeslam him for his stupidity.

One time my roommate was having a little poker party. I came out of my room and some random dude I’ve never met before goes, “oh here’s the protein junky. Let me guess your on creatine too.” Then he challenged me to a pushup competition and I said “sure I guess”. For some reason he never got out of his chair to do it. I regret to this day that I didn’t leap over the table and deck him in face after his first comment.

so this guy’s in your apartment talking shit? I woulda thrown his ass out.

Another one: I worked at this pool store one summer between sophomore and junior year of college. The owner went to a gym quite a bit as well. He was pretty jacked, a bit top heavy, but he had impressive legs still, so he was no slacker. Anyway I was talking to one of the other guys there about how I had leg pressed some amount of weight recently, (no memory of what it was, nothing impressive really).

The owner overheard this and got all in a huff, and I couldn’t figure out why. One of the girls working there says 'well you know, he takes the gym seriously and he works really hard at it…so…you know." I didn’t know. She had to explain to me the fact that I could leg press almost as much as him actually offended the guy.

Almost everyone at my gym uses the 115s, even the high school kids with their pants sagging and their sideways hats.

go roid ragin like Arnold? WTF does that even mean? haha The funny thing is, if you kicked his ass people would think it WAS roid rage.

I think the weirdest thing that has been said to me, multiple times too, is that I am “built like a black guy.” No idea if that is a compliment or what, its just a super weird thing to have someone tell you.

Back when the New Year Resolutioners were in full force, I was working chest, and in between sets I people watched some skinny pale kids bench. The spotter kid was trying to get his bud to do another rep (he obviously could), but the lifter said, mid-rep as he rested the weight on his chest, “No dude, I can only do this many, I’m trying to power lift bro.” It was a sad, sad day in my life.
