Weight Loss in Basic Training

How much weight/strength can one expect to lose durring basic training and AIT.

Some of my friends went through it and gained weight…but I guess they really never hit the gym or did anything physical before hand so that makes sense.

From what im understanding in AIT things are more lax and you get more free time for the gym. I was just wondering what other people on this site experienced.
