Finally a demonstration of pride in our nation by a politician…

I support the president on this 100%
When the president was asked at a Rose Garden question-and-answer session whether the anthem should be sung in Spanish, he replied: “I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English.”

I completely agree with the President.
What joke!
This is nothing more than a smoke screen to divert attention from the Presidents pathetically weak stance on our very serious border problem.
In other words, politics as usual…and it makes me want to PUKE!
what’s the big fuckin’ deal!?
If some British music producer wants to make a Spanish version of the US national anthem, who the fuck cares??? It’s not like it’s going to be sung in Spanish at baseball games or anything.
Gimme a fuckin’ break.
I have said it once and I will say it again. If no one has the balls to make English the nationl language, then we have to right to say which language you should HAVE to learn to be a citizen.

i assume you mean we have no right?
most states have english as the official language. So, sure, we do have the right to say that…
I believe it is against US law to mandate an official language. It has to be done through the states or go the amendment route.
Uh dude? YOU HAVE TO PASS AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE EXAM IN ORDER TO OBTAIN CITIZENSHIP.
I know some people are against educating the children of illegal immigrants, but this is one of the reasons it is a good idea.
It forces them to learn English and to learn American values. It also allows them to participate effectively in the economy and pay more taxes.
Whether or not they should be able to stay, much less whether or not their parents should be able to get into the country and bring/have children here is another kettle of fish.
Don’t confuse one issue with the other…

But you don’t have to speak English to get a driver’s license, or vote, or get in an elevator, or even take a piss. I know several hundred people that refuse to speak English because everything is done for them in spanish.
Get a clue.
I don’t think those who are obtaining citizenship are the real problem here…
A remix to be released in June will contain several lines in English that condemn U.S. immigration laws. Among them: “These kids have no parents, cause all of these mean laws … let’s not start a war with all these hard workers, they can’t help where they were born.”
Down here, the local stations that are Tex-Mex (mixed English/Spanish) are pretty pissed off about the whole thing. I would say the comments are running about 80% negative.
It doesn’t bother me at all that they sing it in a different language. It’s a worker’s movement trying to get some publicity. They’re not mocking it at all.
However, on the notion about speaking Spanish all over the place in America…here you go. My grandparents had to learn it. So should you.

Well said.

As shocking and appalling as it may seem, in Miami, FL you can take the exam in Spanish.

That’s right. You also have to learn the constitution and how the government works. Things that I think many born in the US could not explain.
You also get a little US flag, Wow! Makes it all worthwhile!

Actually, my understanding from history is that when people first immigrated to the US it was considered inappropriate to speak their first language in public. So they learned English quickly and used it in public to “fit in”.
Imagine that; going to another country and not expecting them to change everything for you and wanting to fit in with those already here. Freaks!
I have to agree with you ZEB but it is not all Bushes fault. To get rid of all illegal immigrants would be a very expensive operation.

“Our Anthem”
(Translated from Spanish)
Verse 1
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail as night falls?
Its stars and stripes floated yesterday
In the fierce combat, the sign of victory
The flame of battle, in step with liberty.
Throughout the night it was said, “It is being defended.”
Chorus:
Oh, say! Does it still show its beautiful stars
Over the land of the free, the sacred flag?
Verse 2
Its stars and stripes, liberty, we are the same.
We’re brothers, it’s our anthem.
In the fierce combat, the sign of victory,
The flame of battle, in step with liberty.
Throughout the night it was said, “It is being defended.”
Chorus:
“Oh, say! Does it still show its beautiful stars?
Over the land of the free, the sacred flag?”
