Vinny's Strongman Log II

10/18/21 - bw 236. Carbs have been cut in half and I am feeling it. Felt fine before the workout then as soon as I put 60kg on the bar it just felt so heavy. I also lost the bar a bit on my top set and felt it pull on my lumbar a bit. Basically working around a disc bulge.

Can I ask a question? What is the goal of having Travis as your coach? Is there a goal? Or maybe another way to put it - how much further do you think you can take it?

From the out side - you are pretty strong. Your front squat has got to be pushing 450lb, you can press 350lb with no leg drive and was pushing a 400lb split jerk. If I reached those standards I’d wonder how much more I had.
How much more do you think he can get out of you?

And this is not me suggesting coaching is not worth it. It is the opposite. If you got that far with out a pro coach I think with one you’re gonna do even better. I’ just interesting in seeing if you have any big goals or any significant miles stones you want to hit.

Well, I desperately need direction and even though it looks like I’m doing well sometimes, I’m really not. I am pretty lost with my training and have been thinking about getting a coach for a while now, but stubbornly put it off.

I am also not using PEDs so I am sort of trying to level out and convince myself to start at the right time but I seriously cannot afford using them if my body is not dialed in (healthy).

It’s also a huge breath of fresh air for me. Just feels good to have someone there for me instead of feeling like I’m just a big echo chamber.

And thanks, I’m pretty strong when I’m dialed in (I have front squatted 500lbs before heh).

Yeah I remember now. That’s massive. I’m working on getting to a 400lb / 4 plate front squat. That’s due about January. If all goes to plan.

So you’re planning on jumping on a cycle? No judgement. I’m legitimately tempted. I have a comp I want to do. Top 3 go through to the final in front of 4000 people. No way I’m risking finishing 4th by 1/2 a point.
I think I have to accept it’s not right for right now. I’m still making (slow) but constant gains. When those stop who I knows.

As I say to get as strong as you are with out a coach is amazing. With a coach like Travis you could do some really good stuff.

I would hop on gear if it was for pushing a pro card. I’m not strong enough yet to where that would solidify it but I think at my best condition with some good planning and coaching I can make it happen.

I think it depends on where you’re at though. I’ve sort of fumbled on and off in the last 3 years to get some footing. Have gotten plenty stronger but it was a bit fleeting and I negligently lost track here and there. I’m 27 and if all goes well, I have 5-10 years of getting stronger with some troubleshooting.

Dave Tate mentions PEDs like an ace card. Use them when they’re going to give you the most bang for your buck and not in vanity. Of course, it’s ironic because wanting to be a pro strongman is equally as vain to me as just using it for aesthetics but my point (his point) is to not blow it frivolously and to make the juice worth the squeeze.

Yeah - I’m still making too much progress to really warrant jumping on. I would love to - but the health risks for little reward. And reward I can get with out the risk as well. Just slower.

Agreed. And I’m a long way off your strength level even. So I don’t need them yet.

Feeling like my cardio isn’t even being challenged yet I have NO force production on the sled drags. Low carb is kicking my ass.

10/26/21 - bw 233. Struggling hard atm. Back is feeling vulnerable in new ways. I feel less or no strain on deadlifting 225 and more strain when push pressing 225. It feels like compression/sheer force is just shutting down my lumbar. Pain is few far and in between. It feels more like intense stiffness of the spine and rigidity (defense mechanism).

225x4 accidentally did 4. zzz. Feels better with belt off and lower weight. I simply cannot be explosive on these though. Very slow leg drive and focusing on upright torso and not letting the bar crash down on chest on dip down.
225x5 horrifying. Barely holding onto core tightness. Back is definitely way worse and I have no idea why. It felt better than ever last week.

225x5
275x8, extra rep by accident. Felt so-so.
275x7,complete trash. Head down, taking too much time getting tight.
275x7, best set, head up, took haste on set up and squared feet

RDL
225x8
225x8 sat back more, felt a bit better but i feel a slight asymm twisting which irritates lower-left back. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
225x10 loaded right leg more, felt better, less pain (albeit some discomfort)

Back feeling iffy. Nuff said. Travis and I are essentially trouble-shooting. Trying to take it day by day and slowly note things that hurt, things that feel good. Mobility things that help, mobility things that do not. He wants me to progressively overload without hitting numbers that require too much effort but using heavy enough weights to actually elicit some sort of challenge.

Some weird ass 3 inch rogue band loaded with 300lbs of tension yanking on my left hip laterally. Seems to help improve my faber test yet not enough to match my right no matter what i do. Might need work but i surmise the unilateral pain to be a result of a severe (borderline astonishing) left hip impingment.

225x2 using a high rack position this time around. Goal is to atleast get all warm up sets with the rack position and abandon it if I cant access power on top sets.
265x5 beautiful
265x5 solid
265x5 getting pretty tough by the end but doable. Hard to really drive completely into it with hips due to being tentative with back.
265x5 busted these out slightly easier than last set. The last rep I leaned back a bit and definitely felt an empty space where my back would normally “catch” the weight. I legit feel like I might have an extension and not flexion lumbar issue.
265x5 smoked this shit. Easiest aside from first set.

Is this part of Travis’ coaching, or just something you’re doing on your own? Cool to see how it’s going.

He is actually doing my diet as well. I had no idea where “cut the carbs in half” was going haha.

Looks like we’re slowly teaching my body to use carbs like rocket fuel.

That’s pretty cool that you get both out of the same source. Would it be rude to ask how much Travis is charging for his service?

450$/month. Did some consulting with others and went with Travis in spite of his pricing. He gets back to me multiple times a week as well as a biweekly 30-1hr phone call. Being my diet coach/training and working closely with my hip/back issues.

Of course, anything can change and anything can happen. So far this has been a much needed change diet and training wise. I felt like I was catastrophizing myself slowly with the same inner-demon rhetoric that just insidiously chips away at your will. Having someone in my ear has been HUGE so far for my consistency.

11/4/21 - Basically full speed ahead zero carbs. Feeling almost ill. Just moderate lethargy and subtlety of feeling “under”. Unless I’m coincidentally getting sick haha.

That’s really cool. I saw Jon Andersen was working with Travis for a bit, and it looks like Travis adopted a similar approach with nutrition. Always cool to see you killing it.

I’m very excited to watch you progress and get even stronger and more competitive throughout this process!

11/5/21 - bw 229. Feeling drained. Nothing left to say.

Back Squats
95x3,3 paused
135x5,3,3 (paused)
185x3 paused
225x2+1 paused
275x10 slow and concerted. Not easy but had plenty of air left for more.
275x9 cant count when concentrating lol
275x11
275x11 very challenging ot maintain my core here. Some reps I tip forward a bit much and need to sit the hips back a bit.

Sled Drags
tire x 80’ x 2 rounds. Hard because I’m so depleted but my cardio was almost unphased, and I’m dragging a 250+lb tractor tire on asphalt! Had breath back to resting state nearly after 2-3 min post drag.
