Vinny's Strongman Log II

Btw, I finally succumbed to buying stone sleeves. I looked for Spartan sleeves but I guess they’re defunct. I went with the Victory ones of Starting Strongman. Anyone have any experience with sleeves and brands?

2/3/18 - Bw 221 Okay wow I fucking destroyed it today. Best front squat workout in a long time.

Front Squat
45x8,5,5
135x5,5
225x3,3
275x1
335x1
365x1
405x3 feels so easy, i can do this for 6-7 AMRAP fresh I think:
405x3
405x3
405x3
405x5 pretty sure this is a PR and it was after all those sets. Absolute front squat destruction.

Tire flip
700x60’
700x60’
700x60’ tore my left calf partially, gonna have to let this heal

Some serious work here, well done on the PR. Quality

Thanks lol…sadly my calf is certainly torn moderately in severity.

This morning I could barely stand and all day yesterday I could barely walk. Fortunately, it feels a bit better after putting some weight on it and I’m hoping I can make a FULL recovery.

Basically I was flipping the tire and I heard a loud ass pop. I can move my ankle freely with no restriction and my range of motion is fine. However, as expected, when I dorsiflex my ankle, it’s quite tight up at the top of the calf. As for walking, I cannot push off the toe at all. It’s very painful and I must limp in order to get around.

What worries is me is I don’t know why this happened. I’ve flipped that tire MUCH more haphazardly than that and for many more reps. I’m also worried it’ll happen again since it’s only just over 2 months out from this contest. Anyone have any experience with this and recovery?

Sorry to not have any advice to offer dude, but you’ll be healed up soon enough.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I wish you a speedy recovery man!

Damn, sorry to hear. Get better soon man!

hope it heals up soon man

That sucks, hoping it heals quickly.

For minor muscle tears ive had in the past (mostly hamstrings) having a scrapping tool used on it really helps, along with plenty of icing over the next few days.
In place of a scrapping tool you can use a knife or fork handle on the injured area and it should really bring out the bruising.

Thanks guys. So far it’s improving daily. The day OF the injury was horrible. I could barely stand. As of now, I can limp around, but it’s not too noticeable. I still cannot push off the toe of the foot yet but it’s building back up to that slowly. I’d imagine by next week I’ll be able to walk again with little issue. I’m hoping this heals up properly as opposed to quickly.

I don’t know if I’ll be competing in 2 1/2 months…atm, the only thing bothering me is not knowing how I could have prevented this. I’ve flipped that tire SO many times…I just can’t pinpoint what I did leading up to this to make that happen. My calf felt fine, everything felt fine. Oh well.

@gt213 I’ll give that a try. I’ve already been rubbing at it, sometimes quite hard, with my fingers.

Tore mine nearly 2 years ago, running a 3km time trial, 2 days after a 14km race. It took 14 weeks to heal up fully, which left me 4 weeks prep for a planned half marathon. Needless to say the half was not pretty !!! Had lots of physio sessions including dry needles, massage, scraping. Recovery took a bit too long because i tried to run too much on it after 4 weeks. Get yourself a good physio who knows how to treat sport injuries and actually listen to them. Good luck with the recovery.

Sorry about the calf. No advice other than just let it heal man

Thanks for the well wishes guys. It’s healing well, I can walk unencumbered atm and it’s a bit sore on the negative portion of a calf raise but that’s about it. Still not pushing it in any sense. I didn’t lift for 10 days until today, so it was a shock on my system. I’m sad that I had to stop for this long because I was SO peaked on my front squats. I worked hard as fuck for that and it sucked, so I’m gonna have to build back up.

As for my contest, I may have to pull out of it to avoid reinjury and favor longevity. I don’t know yet, we’ll see.

2/13/18 - Bw 220 atm, not sure how as I’ve been eating like a fucking walrus.

Playing some catch up in here, but awesome work you’ve been putting in.

Random injuries suck. I mean, all injuries suck, but the ones where you almost deserved it are easier to accept than ones that should never have happened in the first place. Hope it heals quick for you man.

Nice work, man I want your overhead numbers lol !!

@simo74 have you seen @strongmanbrett’s log? His one rep max on the Strict press is 185/83kg. Except, he’s 15. it makes me want to quit lifting :joy:

Thanks man. Certainly not par numbers for me but still strong I guess.

2/19/18 - Bw 224. Squatting again since the injury. The calf feels virtually unaffected from all non strenuous movement. I can stand on my tip toes without issue and walk unimpinged aside from some tightness after I get out of my truck after a long drive (strangely not upon waking in the morning though).
