Vinny's Strongman Log II

8/20/16 - Giving myself a break from weight training for a week or so. Definitely got some nuts and bolts coming loose and I don’t want to risk it. Have to take it easy on the bicep and NOT get cocky and attempt to constantly go hard on bicep intensive stuff weekly.

6 Rounds of 15 burpees (unbroken), 20 hammer to tire swings. I rested about 1 minute between each round.

Bit of an ache in the right knee from the burpees but all is fine. Definitely a tough little work out but nothing spectacular.

125/hand x 220ft
125/hand x 440ft made it all the way without dropping. Hard.

8/24/16 - Good day of strict log. I will start training this again for a bit cycling this one week, then clean and press with log on the other week.

Strict Log
110x3,3
160x3
210x2
225x7 PR by 1 rep, went for 8 but I couldnt lock it out. The weight flew up on the first rep, I just have to get a better rhythm. I sort of stumbled after the first rep and had to gentrify my stance and the log sort of wanted to slide off me. Improvement regardless.

Burpees, overhead pressing, cleans, weird implements I’ve never seen? Are you doing crossfit or something?

Also damn, sorry to hear about everything exploding on you.

Idk, this strongman stuff is too hard! Crossfit is fun and I don’t get bruised and battered!

And yeah, I guess I’ve been going hard as fuck this year so it makes sense stuff would kind of go awry eventually. No worries.

On the plus side, there are way more hotties in Crossfit…

@Benanything That may very well be true.

8/26/16- Today was hard as hell and I couldn’t be happier for that. I definitely felt some serious lung pain, some of the worst in recent times. Tire flips in heat will do that!

Pause Front Squat
135x3,3,3
185x3
225x3
275x3
275x3
275x3 all super easy and comfortable, just did what was needed today.

Tire Flips
700x5
700x5
700x10
700x10
700x10
700x10
700x10

Yeah, so I originally wanted 100 total reps but the tire was kicking my ASS today. I flipped on a flat concrete driveway, so while the grip on the tire was consistent, I didn’t have much room to get my fingers under it. When you flip on uneven asphalt/roads, sometimes, if not most of the time, you’ll be able to get so much of your hand under it and it can make the flip worlds easier.

Some ab stuff and done. Gotta say, I’m fucking excited for this heat to go. It has been one hell of a hot humid summer in the Carolinas this year (like always.) It’s a commodity to have the heat positively affect your training, but after some time it becomes redundant and miserable.

There are? Time to switch sports!

8/28/16

Deadlifts (sumo)
135x3,3,3
225x3
315x3 felt awful
405x1
500x1
550x5 hook grip
550x5 HG
550x5 HG, bar feels stiff and foreign
550x5 had to use straps here because my callus ripped open
550x5 yeah glute started cramping after the 4th rep and I couldnt get into position so I ended up stiff legging the last rep like a fucking idiot.

Haven’t felt this bad in a while. Right quad is feeling strange. Aside from how I felt, I still got a serious volume PR out of the way. I believe my best AMRAP with that weight 6 months ago was only 6 reps. I can probably hit it for 8 or 9 now.

Stiff Leg Banded Deadlifts (just bands, I lay out a band on the floor straight out and step on it and deadlift it)
Black x 25
Black x 25
Black+Green x 20
Black +Green x 20
Black + Green x 15 hard, definitely feel these most in the upper hamstring/glute and some lower back

Wtf have you done with Vinny you sumo pulling Cylon

At first I was weak at it but then I started getting infinitely stronger. It also made my conventional go up without even training it, so that’s nice.

8/30/16

Log (clean and press each rep)
110x3,3,3
160x3,3
210x3
245x1
245x1
245x1
280x3
270x4 cleans and presses, then an extra 2 presses on the last clean.

Sore lower body, had to suck it up today.

Strict Log w/ Band Suspended Weights
110+50lbs x 3
160+50lbs x 1 almost blacked out, had to rerack
160+50lbs x 5 ties a PR, somehow wanted 6, not even close.
110+50lbs x5, x5, x5, x5 really hard

Bench
85x30
85x30
85x30

9/1/16 - Definitely went pretty hard today. Had gotten deadlifts out of the way this week and did not have to do them again so yeah, definitely felt strong but also a few eye opening things. BW 230

Beltless Pause Front Squat
135x3,3,3
185x3
225x3
275x1
365x1
365x1
365x1
365x1
365x1
365x1

All the above sets were pretty easy. A bit slow toward the end but I probably had 3-4 reps AMRAP on the final set had I repped it out.

Farmers Walk (drop and repick at half way)
260/hand x100ft
280/hand x100ft
280/hand x100ft
280/hand x100ft okay so the repick was on an decline so it was actually a really awkward horrible feeling side handle deadlift. It felt effortless on flat ground but I actually almost died repicking.

The runs were strong and my speed was okay, but it needs to get faster. Also, my biceps and brachialis/brachiradioalis are feeling pretty achy after the farmers. Not sure if that’s normal, can’t remember.

9/3/16 - Light yoke and some back/ab. Nothing eventful, just keeping the wheels rolling.

9/5/16 - BW 229

Log (out of rack)
110x5,3
160x3
220x1
250x1 blacked out, dropped log
270x1 blacked out again, dropped log…again. This is due to nerves and premeditating too much before I take the weight out of the rack. Don’t do that!
290x2 easy double and I stayed conscious yay!
290x2 easy
290x2 easy!
290x2 little stagger on sticking the last rep but okay.
290x2
290x2
290x4 AMRAP, didn’t have the power to stick out the last rep, but I can definitely hit this for like 5-6 fresh.

I think I learned how important it is to have a level head and not be too emotionally invested during your training. I mean it might be okay for a deadlift, but when a log is on your neck it can get pretty hairy fast. At least for me this is true, anyway.

Strict Log w/ Band Suspended Weights
110x3,3
110+50lbs x 3
110+100lbs x 1, x 1 couldn’t do any more without blacking out.

9/7/16 - Was feeling in a fog the whole time during this session and everything just felt off. I still gave it all I had. BW 230

135x5,5
225x3,3
275x2
365x1
405x3
405x3
405x3 almost lost it on the last rep.

Not happy with this workout at all.I just felt like the weight was laughing at me in between sets lol. You’d think after hitting 425 for 4 not long ago that 405 wouldn’t be too much of an issue, but front squats in my opinion are probably THE hardest lift to get stronger if you’re already advanced/elite at the lift. Just sucks. I will get stronger though at it.

Farmers (turns at every 60 feet, no drops)
120/hand x 140ft
120/hand x 140ft
120/hand x 200ft
120/hand x 300ft
120/hand x 400ft

For those contests where they accidentally switch feet with meters.

LOL.

9/9/16 - Boring shitty deadlifts. Didn’t go heavy but i trained conventional so it made it heavy.

Conventional Deadlifts EMOM for 10 minutes: 1 rep@500lbs. Hook grip, belt only. GROSS!

Hip Thrusts
135x20,x20,x20,x20

Some planks and done.

I really really really really really really really hate conventional deadlifts. I can pull 500lbs effortlessly sumo, but i’m having such a hard time generating power off the floor in conventional. Once it gets past mid-shin it’s just the most effortless lock out ever. Just gotta practice it every so often. I can’t train it more than once a month honestly or my lower back will actually disintegrate.

That seems so backwards lol. But at the end of the day as long as you can deadlift in some fashion, the weight on the bar is all that matters.

Dude…You are looking great man. Strong and endurance…Seriously impressed with your training man.

Well, that’s my shitty body for you. I’ve always been weakest in that position. A strong lockout is nice for carries and front squats or something, but it’d be invaluable to have no issues picking up things from the floor, like stones, sandbags, etc. Ah well.

You are keeping me humble…VERY humble. Thanks for the words.

240x5 okay so it’s 2016 and people are still fabricating logs without knurling on the handles and it’s pissing me off. I had the strength (easily) for a 5x5 but I could not grip the fucking log. It was slipping around like someone put butter on handles. Chalk just turned to mud as soon as I touched it with the sweat and so I was just not having it. Cooler weather can’t come soon enough.

This is strongman not cirque du soleil… (or maybe it’s not possible to distinguish the two.)
