USC Stafon Johnson Needed Neck Surgery

Not sure if this has been posted yet:

USC running back Stafon Johnson is having throat surgery Monday after a weightlifting accident in a campus weight room.

The senior was bench-pressing in the morning with a spotter when the bar fell out of his right hand and landed on his throat, according to a report on USCâ??s Web site.

Johnson is in critical but stable condition, a California Hospital Medical Center spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times Monday evening.

â??It hit him with a lot of force, and it hurt him,â?? coach Pete Carroll said after the Trojansâ?? brief practice Monday night. â??No broken bones as far as I understand, but heâ??s got some damage in there somewhere, and theyâ??re working it out, trying to figure out what it is.â??

The Trojansâ?? head strength and conditioning coach Chris Carlisle said that the bench press is one of the safest exercises in the weight room.

â??Iâ??ve seen players have the bar slip and fall onto their chest, but never in my 25 years of coaching have I heard of someone dropping a bar on their throat,â?? said Carlisle, who according to the Web site was within 10 feet of the accident. â??Weâ??re fortunate he was being spotted.â??

Hmmm. EFS have throat-guards (not sure what they call them) mounted on some of their bench models.

Gotta ask though… How did he manage it? I mean, he must have let his wrists bend backwards to a rather extreme degree?
