Unilateral vs Bilateral

Hey Coach,

I broke my ankle pretty badly last year and even with countless hours of rehab and a long winter of single-leg leg pressing I still can’t squat properly. No matter how much I focus if I even bring the weight up a touch I can feel the imbalance again.

My question for you is what type of unilateral movements can I replace the leg press with? I’m currently training for my last season of football. I was thinking of step-ups, reverse lunges or things like that. But what exercise would you substitute into my routine in the place of squats?
