Trap Bar DL vs. Squats

CT,
I have noticed that some templates for your Layer System omit squatting in favor of the Trap Bar Deadlift. I was wondering if you regard the Trap Bar DL as a reasonable substitute for the barbell squat (either front or back) or rather a temporary change-up for variety’s sake. I have never used the Trap Bar DL extensively, but think it may be favorable in the Layer System – especially for cluster sets.
