Too Much Protein?

My trainer says I need 200 grams of protien per diem. I want to start taking whey in shakes or something but then I found a web site that said that excessive protein intake was dangerous. That it can leech calcium from your bones and weaken them and also that it can damage your liver! Is this true?? How much is too much?

Has anyone heard of people being harmed by too much protein?

???

Thats a crock of shit. Especially when its only 200g.

Like he said. It truly is a crock. Really, it’s just some made up BS from some anti-supplement guy or pro-carb guy from way back when. It has NO scientific basis whatsoever. It’s just like how people say if you lift a lot, “when you get old, all your muscle will turn to fat”.

It’s just not true. If you stop working out and eat like a pig you’ll lose muscle and gain fat - just like everyone else. But muscle won’t turn into fat.

This is the same thing. Someone just made up the anti-protein stuff.

And besides, 200g isn’t really even close to a lot of protein daily. There are many, many people in the 250-350g area and some people in the 400-500g range.

I consider 200g of protein a day more or less “the minimum amount of protein that MAY be optimal”. In other words, I think 200-325g is probably the optimal level for most weight training people.

Even if that were true (which it isn’t), you’re not going anywhere near too much with 200 grams per day.

Yeah, we have a very high incidence of osteoporosis in this country because calcium is used to neutralize excess acid. But the problem isn’t too much protein, it’s too few fruits and veggies! It’s very important to balance the acidic foods in your diet (primarily protein) with alkaline foods. Spinach is a great one. Just make sure you eat something green with every meal (veggies, not moldy bread or that crazy green ketchup).

Wow, do you guys read anything on this site? Anything Berardi has written?

Thank you very very much for this great input folks. There are some nice people on this site.

Up until now I have been taking spiru tien once a day and a Met rx Big Collossal bar after each work out, and I can tell it’s not working very well. I can just feel that my muscles are starved sometimes

Soooo do any of you take whey? Can you recommend a good brand? There are so many. Frankly they all sound pretty good to me, but thast’s just because I am a n00b. I would rather stick with the plain jane stuff, no isolates or concentrates

Biotest makes high quality suppliments. They have whey, and Metabolic Drive.

The difference is that Metabolic Drive his micellar casein in it, which absorbs slower.

You may want to look into Metabolic Drive, too. Either way, you wont go wrong with Biotest.

Asking if anyone takes whey on a BB site is like asking if anyone uses shoes on a distance running site. It’s a staple. There’s no reason not to use it.

And since you apparently don’t know (otherwise you wouldn’t ask for brand recommendations), this site is owned by Biotest. They make a great whey powder that is $30 for 5 lbs, and you can’t beat that anywhere. Click the “store” button at the top of the page.

There are a lot of myths surrounding protein.

Here are a couple good articles by Berardi:

After trying a few types of protein supplements, I have found the ones sold here were the only ones I could get down without adding milk.

There are a ton of articles here with great information, so read up.

200kg of protein a day is waaay too much unless your are a large cat like a lion or a tiger, or a liger

I am 5’ 11, 195 lbs and 12% body fat. 200 grams is probably just about right.

200g is prob OK for you but my point was, and I was trying to stress it, is that 200g is BUGGER ALL compared to the amount of protein that you would need to be consuming to be bad for you - and hence emphasise that the scaremongers who say you should not get “too much protein” are full of it. How much are they talking about as “too much”? 50g ??? 100g???

ok… good point. I understand now. Just one thing though, pal… I am an American. I don’t know what “bugger all” means

By the way, your body doesn’t utilise ALL of the protein solely for building muscle. Protein is also used as a source of energy and other functions.

You’ll be better off eating more protein to ensure your muscles get what they need.

Your trainer doesn’t know squat.

Bill Pearl suggests that all you need is 1 gram for every 2 lbs of bodyweight per day.

There was an interesting study in Japan done with the olympic weighlifting team, where they analyzed the intake of protein with respect to strength and performance. The end result of the study was that they discovered that the weightlifters achieved optimum strength and performance when consuming 1gm of protein for every kilogram (2.2lbs) of bodyweight.

I will try to find you a link to this study.

Be smart, and don’t waste your product or money.

I don’t get why there’s such a huge fuss over getting too much protein. At 200g, that’s only 800 calories. If you are trying to get stronger, everything else is going to have to come from carbs and fat.

And since most people run the other way from fat, that means people who freak out over eating more than a handful of protein each day are more than likely advocating that you gorge yourself on carbs. I fail to see how that is any healthier.

imo its better to get more protein when bulking because it has a higher thermic eefect and increase g-flux without adding more carbs and fats that are more likely to be stored as fats. im 215 and i take in about 400g’s of protein a day when bulking. im not dead

lol…200kg is around 440g of protein. I remember CT going up to almost that much of protein during his contest prep.
