The Wire is the Greatest TV Series

The Wire sounds mean, I think I’ve heard about it and it may have even aired on some channel at some time down here in NZ. I quickly looked it up on Wikipedia, it says that it wasnt received to well both commercially and critically. On a normal analysis you’d conclude that because it lacked both commercial and critical appeal that it straight up wasnt that good. That is however until it stated in the next sentence that some critics say its the best tv series of all time.

I like kinda like those cop/crime tv shows like Law and Order. how would you guys compare it to that?

It isn’t even in the same league. You really HAVE to watch the Wire; it is the best. Followed by Rome and then Deadwood.

I guess I’m the only one who thinks the whole season with the docks sucked ass, I kept falling asleep. I didn’t like the very last episode either I think they could’ve went another season or two with the wire. End it with the kid who killed omar dying

i ended up really liking frank sabatca and season 2. it didnt have the main suspects in it really, but it came full circle when marlo wanted to get in touch with the greek. i think they ended it alright, doogie becoming the next bubbles and everything going full circle.

i think it takes stones to cancel a show before its lost its legs, you dont want to keep drawing it out and forcing plot lines and dialog

Sopranos lost steam after pussy died. But was great for a couple seasons.

Will they ever create a better character than Bubbles
DUDE?

pussy died in season 2!

are you saying it got shit after season 2?
Welllll, didn’t become total shit but slipped in a pile and started the slippery slope to shitz-ville.
Did love it but it should have ended 3 seasons before it did.
IMO season 4 & 6 were the best ones.

If you guys liked The Wire you should check out Treme. It’s by the guys that made The Wire and it has some of the same actors in it. First episode was cool. Here’s the trailer:

Yeah, this looks pretty interesting. I might have to run it down once I land in 'Stan. As for The Wire, I’ve gotta get seasons 4 and 5 before I continue watching it. I seriously hate waiting for new seasons to come out on dvd for current shows.

And I have to agree…Sopranos wasn’t shit to me. I got bored as hell after season 1.

Firefly.

And Firefly will always be better because for what it could have been, whereas I got five seasons out of The Wire.

Aye true mate. It fell apart after Adibese got killed who, funnily enough was the most prolific rapist on the show.

“Adibese. How do you get your hat to stay on like that?”

The Wire is easily the best show ever made.

Kerley, why dont you start a thread called “The Sopranos is the Greatest TV Series”? Its not even close. Its boring, fat, guidos that sit around eating Deli Meats. I watched about half of a season on DVD and was completely disinterested.

I also am a big fan of gangster movies and hate cop dramas…

Gotta luv Baltimore! They actually DOWNPLAYED shit for TV compared to some of the shit I saw/went through growing up there. Greenmount and 33rd in the '80’s was OFF THE FUCKING CHAIN. Hampden (Falls and 36th) wasn’t much better. Most of the friends I had from the neighborhood are either dead or in jail.

It hasn’t gotten much better. My Cousin is currently a Baltimore City Cop. Some of the shit he tells me that doesn’t make the news puts the Wire to shame.
Gotta agree it was toned down. I grew up around Memorial Stadium, so I knew Greenmount and 33rd very well. And don’t forget about Old York Rd. I went to Poly and played football so half the white guys on the team lived in Hampden, so I did my time around there, too - during the day because you know how it got at night.
Yeah, it would have been pretty fucked up had you been there at night - sad but true. I moved to Hampden from Abel Avenue (near the stadium) when I was in Middle School - went to Robert Pool and then went to Poly. I own two houses there now that I rent out right off of “The Avenue” LOL (hon). Do you remember Bella Roma Pizza? (the old one at Keswick and 36th? Across from the Royal Farms?) Best pizza in the world (IMHO). You’re bringin’ me back Lew!

At least you are talking sense Kerley. The Sopranos is utterly peerless and is simply the apex of TV shows. Sadly nothing will ever compare, The Wire had a good crack at it but fell way short in my opinion.

Im surprised you thought season 6 was the best though? Did you mean season 6 part 2?

“You come at the king… you best not miss.”

Undoubtedly the greatest TV show I have ever seen. I too had to go through an adjustment, withdrawal period after it was over. I didn’t know what to do with myself for a couple days there.

Omar was by far my favorite character, although I still haven’t come to grips about the way his story ends.

The Wire is literally the greatest TV show ever, and about as close as you can come to a novel in TV form. Every season was incredible- and last one about the newspapers, which hits close to home, was DEAD ON.

The first couple years of the Sopranos were great- the last three were absolutely awful, and anticlimactic in every possible way.

Only an idiot would ever say that the Sopranos was a better series- it lacked the writing and the overall intelligence of the Wire in a big way. What show do you really need bullets flying in all the time just to keep the morons sated?

You must be intelligent to watch The Wire. This eliminated 98 percent of the population, and so it was never as big as the Sopranos. But it was still far better… and Treme, that shows incredible too.

personally i thought every season was great (including part 1 of season 6) except the 5th season, the 5th season was just ok.

EDIT: i thought the wire was brilliant i just think the sopranos was better.

You don’t write a hundred more pages of a novel just because you can. You say what you’re there to say, and you get out. That’s what made the Wire so much better than anything else that’s come out. It literally ruined TV for me.

How about you suck my balls.

I mean seriously, what show would have come with a scene like this in the first couple episodes- and then have it be absolutely relevant to every episode after?

The show was masterful.

Four seasons later- what scene you get? Bodie gets popped, just like a pawn on the chessboard- don’t run away, two cats coming at him diagnolly, and a guy moving like a knight ends up getting him.

Really- who can pull shit like that off on TV?

^i nearly shed a tear when bodie died.

YOU SOB that never clicked with me before. Damn that was good.

Still the season with the kids from start to finish. Who writes a character like Dookie & Bubbles? Them bastardes pulled me in and at times had me yelling at the tv.
