The Downward Spiral

Day 95

Warm up.

Dead:
285 x 5 ( I think the number here was supposed to be 310, but I couldn’t count today. It was hard to see straight, Im so sleep deprived).
350 x 3
390 x 3 (PR. I wish I was well-rested; this could have been great).

Squat:
(165 x 10) x 5

Well, it’s a cheat meal kind of night. Thai food. Back on it tomorrow, and I’ve got a deload week coming up. I resolve to sleep better, cut calories back a bit, and get new running shoes.

Fuck booze. Replace it with masturbation and/or tren and you will be good to go.

Haha. No kidding. I’m doing alright so far. I think I replaced it with about 4 extra hours of work a day.

Day 93

Still on track.

AM workout:

Muay Thai, about 45 minutes on the heavy bag. A bit of jumproping.

Later I’m going to get the rings out and fool around with those. It’s a deload week so I’m a bit lost as to what I should be doing, besides resting.

PM Workout:

20 minutes of ring work. Back levers, front lever attempts, etc.

Bench:
135 x 5
185 x 5
225 x 5

Facepulls:
3 sets of 15

Pushups: 100

BB curl: 53 (thought I’d try for 100, a la Jim Wendler’s new article, just to see how hard it is. Goddamn.) Probably doesn’t help that I never ever fucking curl and hate doing it.

Day 92

AM: 1 hour walk. Caught in the rain in the German countryside. Frightfully romantic, except it smelled like cowshit.

PM: Deload squat workout.

hang snatch:
(85lb x 5) x 3.

Clean:
135 x 3
155 x 3
155 x 3

Squat:
135 x 5
205 x 5
225 x 5

Day 91:

AM Workout

Short Hill Sprints: 10 sets of 3 for 30 total. 1 minute break in between.

Day 90:

Played fetch.

18lb medicine ball. Chest throws x 10, one arm heaves x 5 per arm, overhead throws x 10, reverse overhead x 10. All that 4 times.

Day 89:

Gut Check Day.

Clean:
135 x 5
150 x 5
170 x 5

Squat:
190 x 5
220 x 5
245 x 8

Deadlift:
(210 x 10) x 5

Today felt great. Full of piss and vinegar. I think there is something to these deload weeks. It was more than being physically well rested; there was a greater sense of euphoria at being in the gym. I was more alert and focused.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Sometimes training just catches up with people.

It really does, and sometimes it’s such a gradual process that you don’t realize it until one day you’re in the gym and just don’t have anything to put underneath the bar. I’m going to start investing more in rest periods. They’re key to the strength game.

Day 88:

Page 3. Fuck everyone who said I wouldn’t make it. Haha.

30 minutes of heavy bag work.

Ab stuff:
landmine ab exercise.
stir the pot
cable crunches
hanging leg raises.

My legs feel a bit plasmic after yesterday. I’m sure that tomorrow they’ll feel even worse. Need to get some of those legit supplements.

Day 87:

Cheat day, meal-wise. I’ve been hitting about 2500 calories on workout days, and 2200 or so on rest days and conditioning-only days. Today I’m not recording anything, but I’ll try to keep it clean.

Bench:
185 x 5
215 x 5
245 x 8 (Let’s say 7 because my spotter sucked. When I was grinding towards the top of the last two reps he just popped it up. I wanted to slap him).

Press:
(85 x 10) x 5 (ugh.)

Shrug and Pull:
(155 x 10) x 4
155 x 8

Pullups (neutral grip, a bit narrow):
8, 8, 6, 6

EZ curl bar, 35lbs. Curl x 100. Like sewing burning charcoal into your arms. I think I’m going to start throwing in a 100 rep set (“century set” I’ve heard it called) at the end of each workout, not on any major muscle groups, but I’ll do this for a cycle or two and see what happens.

Do a lot of guys full-on strength train in the US forces? - from what I’ve seen, guys over here seem less bothered about their size/strength and more about bashing the fitness.

Honestly no, they don’t. I know very few people who train like I do. I’m in an MI unit, though, so you have to take that into account.

Most of the soldiers in my gym either do bodybuilder routines or crossfit. It’s a bit sickening. I think I’m the only person who rucks unless he has to, as well.

Is that an intelligence unit? I’m not really clued up on the US forces. How does that affect the sort of guys, then?

Haaa unfortunately some of my training resembles crossfit a tad, but I’d never see myself signing up for a ‘specialist’ gym - there are only so many ways to skin a cat and if I want to keep strong, fit and able to rep the calisthenics then training pure strength isn’t a viable option.

end hijack/

What is the most you’ve rucked with?

The most I’ve rucked with is probably about 100 lbs. I don’t really have anything heavier than that which I can fit in my ruck. haha.

Yeah it’s intel. It pretty much means I’ve got a mix of characters. There are a lot of kids right out of high school who know that they have everything figured out and won’t take any advice from anyone about anything, then on the other end of the spectrum there are guys with PhDs as well. For awhile there the US army was not picky at all about who they were letting in, they just wanted numbers. For that reason and others there are people who shouldn’t be here because they can’t even do a proper push-up. Hopefully that will change over the next few years. The argument many of them give is that because we are intel, they don’t have to be fit. I think that if you’re going to call yourself a soldier, regardless of country or job description, you need to be physically capable.

Concerning Crossfit, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it as long as it isn’t detrimental to your personal goals. I have trouble keeping weight on when I’m not drinking so I don’t do crossfit. Plus it doesn’t help my run much. Honestly, in Afghanistan, just being stronger than the guy next to you carries more advantage on a daily basis than most other forms of fitness. There’s a lot of shit over there that needs to be moved around, a lot of heavy armored vehicle doors that need to be opened and shut, and things that need to be built. The jokers who can run forever but can’t DL their bodyweight aren’t much good at that point.

Heartily agree with this - if you can’t do a single pushup properly or deadlift your own bodyweight how are you supposed to perform when shit hits the fan??

^ Exactly. Those aren’t the people you want trying to carry you to cover when you take a bullet in the leg, either.

Day 86:

AM Workout - My 30 hill routine. Finally got new running shoes. The change is dramatic. I ran on the last pair for far too long. I have too much running experience to make that kind of stupid mistake.

Also bought my first pair of Converse. We’ll see if it does anything for my lifts tomorrow.

Chuck Taylor’s are awesome to deadlift in.
What kind of running shoes did you get?
