You told us in Deut 7:2 that when the Lord your God delivers them into your power for you to defeat, you must exterminate them. You must not make alliance with them or spare them. My neighbor is a German. It's been decades since World War II. He says he wants to be my friend. I need to borrow his lawnmower, can I do that and then wait until tomorrow to kill him,after I return it?

The irony of a liberal atheist(the author) who doesn't understand the bible or history quoting Mosaic law is supreme. Take slavery for example. Let's assume you're an atheist. What do we know historically? From their earliest recorded history the Hebrews considered themselves runaway slaves. At the time they first appear on the pages of history the Canaanite cities were subject vassal states of Egypt. The Egyptians had been taking slaves from Canaan for centuries. The origins of Abrahamic monotheism and covenant theology lie in a rejection of slavery. This is a letter from a Canaanite governor to the Pharaoh:

The Hebrews turned covenant theology on its head.

These "rebels" aka "abiru" and "habiru" this Canaanite governor mentions are more than likely the proto-Hebrews. There were the first civilisation on earth to reject the kind of slavery that was the norm in every society.

The emancipation proclamation in the US provided the legal framework to reverse the fugitive slave act and allow runaway slaves their freedom. And the Mosaic version:

"You shall not turn over to his master a slave who seeks refuge with you from his master. He shall live with you in any place he may choose among the settlements in your midst, wherever he pleases; you must not ill treat him." - Deuteronomy 23:16

(27:4) "If it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels."

(27:5) "If it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels."

(27:6) "If it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver."

(27:7) "If it be from sixty years old and above; if it be a male, then thy estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels."

Here's a summary:

Over 60 years old: Males 15 shekels, Females 10 shekels.

20 - 60 years old: Males 50 shekels, Females 30 shekels.

5 - 20 years old: Males 20 shekels, Females 10 shekels.

One month to 5 years old: Males 5 shekels, Females 3 shekels.

And babies (or fetuses) less than one month old are worth nothing at all.

SO... If babies are worth nothing at all, why are Christians so uptight about abortion? It seems to me that your God doesn't value babies very much...

*You are not living in the Bronze Age and you do not have a Bronze Age mind; nor do you have an appreciation for Bronze Age culture and its horrifying alternatives (no criticism intended). These rules do not apply to you, although many of them are so much better than those of lawless tribal nomads

*Why is Deut part of the Bible? Read the last chapters backward. As JB puts it, this is the index, the index of laws by which the people regain the Eden lost in the first chapters of Genesis. When you have swallowed this, then the whole story arc is open to you. And you will appreciate the Bronze Age mind just a leeetle bit.

*Polyester and cotton are perfectly legal. The woman is spared.

EXODUS 21:22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

So I don't see anything about burning in hell... Later on in that verse, it talks about what happens if someone kills your Ox. Apparently, and Ox is worth more than a fetus (according to YOUR Bible)

I read it because there are psychopaths crucifying people right now based on what it written in THEIR book. So I was talking shit about the Koran. But it was pointed out to me that there is PLENTY of the same kind of SHIT written in the Bible.

Why is that kind of hate permitted to be printed? Seriously? How can you people HONESTLY love and worship something that would KILL CHILDREN just to teach you a lesson?

The verdict against the Midianites was for that battle. Clearly it did not happen or it did not work, because they remained a rich tribe through the time of the early kings.

Hosea is describing what will happen at the hand of Assyrians, not God. Their fate was determined by their rejection of God's rules.

Look, if you want to call them fairy tales, go right ahead...after you have read them. Did you stop reading Cinderella to your kids, when, at the stroke of midnight, the coach turns to a pumpkin and the coachmen to mice?

The violence and capital punishments and sacrifices you decry all ended in 70 AD. Isn't time to reject what you have been told, and to discover it on your own?

As for fairy tales, they are instructive to help children learn. How is it instructive to have IN A HOLY BOOK, verses where GOD is commanding is favorite people to kill babies? Rape women? Rape young girls? Stone people to death?

What value does that provide?

Is the God you worship today a DIFFERENT God than the one who commanded the infanticide, rape and murder two thousand years ago?

Or is it the SAME God?

What context is there to understand?

Right now, we are all calling the Muslim extremists barbarians for what they are doing in Iraq (killing people, crucifying people, convert or die, etc...). But according to the Bible, God tells his people to put the men to the sword. Kill all the women who have lied down with a man. Save the virgin girls for yourselves. And to kill babies...On multiple occasions.

What am I not understanding here?

Those are the requests of a fucking psychopath...

You are not understanding the origins of human civilization in the Bronze Age. I am repeating myself just this once. When you get that sentence, we may continue.

As for what you consider to be the "requests of a ...psychopath," turn it upside down, and realize they are the rules that put limits on human cruelty, however blind you are to them, and those edicts did not apply beyond the time, or beyond AD 70. When you get that sentence, you may continue. Its worth the journey, even when taken alone.
