It was staged.
Great picture, but it takes away from it to me.
The book “Flags of our Fathers” by James Bradley is a great account of the flag raising on Mt Suribachi and gives the stories of the five Marines and one Navy Corpsman that were in that photo. It is a good read.

One of the five was a Texan. His entire highschool senior class went and enlisted one day during lunch.
You don’t hear stories like that anymore.
