Tempo is huge for training. It’s the time it should take you to lower the weight, pause at the bottom, and raise the weight.
For example, if you are doing dumbbell curls at a 201 tempo, it should take you 2 seconds to lower the weight, 0 second rest at the bottom (arms down, fully extended), and 1 second to bring the weight back up.
Sometimes you will see 40X0. 4 seconds to lower the weight, 0 second rest at the bottom, X means to explode the weight up again, and 0 second rest at the top.
The role of the rest period is to give your body a break in order to build up your strength again. Depending on your training program, rest can vary from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. If you want to get lean, use smaller rest periods between sets (30-60 seconds), if you want to get big, use longer rest periods between sets (2-3 minutes).
