Teenage Niece Tagged in Drinking Photo

Last night around midnight my sister’s boyfriend posted a photo to Facebook of him and my brother taking shots and flipping off the camera. Normally I would chuckle at it as good fun except he tagged my 13 year old niece in the photo as well. For some history my niece has a number of problems including: being caught having sex, sneaking out in the middle of the night, and calling her mother a fucking bitch.

I sent my sister’s boyfriend a message on Facebook stating that I thought that tagging her may not be the kind of message she needs to be sending. He replied back saying sorry that he meant to leave an explanation on the picture as to why she had been tagged.

I went back an looked at the photo again. She was still tagged, but now there was a message stating that she insisted that she be tagged because she was the photographer.

I’m pretty pissed that neither he, my brother, or my sister seem to realize how inappropriate this is. Am I getting my panties in a wad for nothing? I am planning to send another message but want to be sure that I am picking my battles carefully. Is this in some way contributing to the delinquency of a minor?

How old is your brother?

But no matter what the answer is you’re right. Out of my brothers I seem to be the most responsible, and that’s sad as I’m also the youngest…and I’m 39!

Sounds like they either don’t care, or choose to play down the situation. If you’re close to your sister maybe you can talk to her about it, but at the end of the day, she is her daughter.

Don’t try to carry the problems of all on your shoulders, it’s crippling.

My brother is 28 and my sister is 33. It appears that he must have had a change of heart or someone else called him on it because he took the whole picture down. That’s a small victory but what’s more concerning is that she is up at midnight watching her uncle and father figure get blistering drunk.

We live in the same city and I may have to ask her about this, but like you said it’s her kid.

It’s tough when your conscience dictates one course of action, and morally you have no choice but to stay on the sidelines.

Talking is always good.

Wait, so your niece(daughter of your brother or sister)was drinking with your brother(her other uncle or her dad)? Tha fuck?

Soooooo

You’ve never had a drink around a kid before?

Why is this such a big deal?

Its pretty normal for 13 year olds to do all those things without them turning into felons.

Sounds like she’s ready for Maury

Isn’t family great?

I think you are being a lil melodramatic to be honest. I mean, on the one hand it’s perfectly understandable that you’d feel a lil over-protective of your niece given their less than perfect behaviour in the past.

That being, adulthood isn’t something that just happens over…like…BOOM!! 18 now son…it is a matter of degrees.

I have avatar envy.

I don’t think it’s the issue of drinking around her that’s the problem, it’s the type of drinking. My brother has told me stories of how drunk they both get, blackout, puking drunk. With a girl who is already rampant with behavior problems. My sister has been looking into putting her into a girls home because she can’t seem to stay out of trouble. I think all these things considered makes involving her in heavy binge drinking pretty irresponsible.

They do this every Friday and Saturday.

I prefer yours. Didn’t use it because you were.

Too be honest this is very close to the mark. She’s getting to the point where I’m afraid I’m gonna see her on youporn.

For what it’s worth, I agree with you. She’s not doing well and this isn’t likely to help. I doubt there’s anything you can do, but I would be worried, too. She’s very young for this stuff. Girls’ homes aren’t easy to find and aren’t easy to get kids into. There’s a whole HUGE rigamarole involved and most residentially placed kids are in state’s custody.

I hope she turns it around soon.

I don’t mean this to be mean, but perhaps it’s no surprise that your niece is having problems if the adults in her life are as you describe…
I don’t disagree one tiny bit. They will then complain about how she is out of control and they don’t know why.

BTW, why a Steelers fan in Nebraska?
Why not? But seriously my mom bought me a Steelers lamp and T-Shirt from a garage sale when I was about 6 just because I needed them. That was really all it took.
