Surgical Spine Decompression

A couple of months back, I had an MRI to diagnose the classic weakness/numbness/tingling on my right side. The symptoms were spread out over my upper back, pec, and arm muscles, and they were worst in my right tricep.

The MRI confirmed some compression at C5-C6 and C6-C7 due to bone spurs. (I had some disc wear/displacement, but it was very minor.) Later, I had an EMG that further confirmed the compression was responsible for the weakness in my right side. So, I now have an appt with a neurosurgeon to determine whether surgical decompression is an option.

Has anyone ever had a procedure like this? Any idea how likely it is that surgery can remove the bone spurs without permanently reducing function? Does such an intervention necessarily entail a spinal fusion?

Thanks in advance.
