My better-than-average grasp of the english language stops at poetry, research papers, and classic literature type stuff. will someone please explain to me what this means?

“No lover, if he be of good faith, and sincere, will deny he would prefer to see his mistress dead than unfaithful.” Marquis De Sade

I would rather see my lover dead than see her cheat on me.

I’d rather have my lover die than cheat on me.
