Shoulder Issue and Thumbless Bench

In the past two months I’ve developed what I believe to be a rotator cuff issue, and my bench has dropped about twenty pounds. Recently I attempted a thumbless grip bench and found my mobility and strength improved. I was again able to train close to muscular failure without needing to rack the weight because of my shoulder.

But I’ve just read two articles disapproving of a thumbless grip for bench press. I don’t want to make this a habit.

Nevertheless, I’m intrigued. As a diagnostic, would anyone know the reasons why a thumbless grip bench may alleviate a shoulder issue?
