Shoulder-Collarbone Area Clicks/Grinds

Hello T-Nation,

Im having this extremely frustrating injury at my shoulder-collarbone area and am hoping someone would be able to chime in and help me out.

it’s actually quite similar to the injury in this thread weird - Competitive Bodybuilding - Forums - T Nation

It feels as though my shoulder will pop out. I sustained this injury while i was playing rugby a year back - never thought much of it. However recently it’s been giving me trouble. Whenever I put my hand overhead and pack my shoulders and move my hands down infront of me, it hurts like hell at my collarbone-shoulder joint area. it also hurts and clicks/grind whenever i shrug my shoulders. there is also pain in my midback whenever i pack my shoulders.

I apologize if this issue has been discussed but I really can’t seem to find any certain diagnosis of this injury. I’ll been trying to see a physiotherapist ASAP but in my country this might take a while.

Attached is a pic of where the midback pain is. That particular area is also sore to the touch.

Any help is greatly appreciated. This has been bugging at me for quite a long time.

This is when i’m standing relax.

it also hurts when i stretch my neck to the left or right.

It hurts over your AC joint when you take your right arm and cross it over to your left shoulder? We’d need a pic of your front to see what your AC joint looks like compared to your left. You may need an xray to see if you’ve separated it.

Hi 000. Thanks for chiming in. I tested the cross-arm test and it did not seem to cause pain in the shoulder. Is that good?

I’ll attach front and side views.

Thanks for your input

RIGHT VIEW.

I’m also realising i seem to have poor posture at my upperback-neck area. Could this be related to this shoulder injury? If so how do i go about fixing this issue?

I’ve always tried to put more ‘‘rowing’’ volume compared to my ‘‘pushing’’ to even that out, but now it seems my neck is tilted forward…

LEFT VIEW.

Damn this shoulder injury. So far i’ve only gotten some painkillers and ketoprofen(?) gel to apply. I should be able to get a meeting with a specialist in a couple of weeks.

It’s improved slightly. There’s pain in the AC joint if I hunch my shoulder forward and pain in the collarbone if i retract my scapula all the way back. The middle ground between hunching forward and retracting all the way back seems to be manageable pain-wise. The neck and trap muscles on my right side(injured side) seem to be tighter and slightly inflamed.

If anyone has any ideas regarding this injury, feel free to chime in. Your advice is greatly appreciated!

I wish I had something helpful to tell you, regarding treatment. Unfortunately, I’m in a similar position myself.

I just had it x-rayed today to check for separation. My pain is slightly higher than your picture, but the description of movement of the shoulder is pretty spot on. When I’m in a good position, it doesn’t hurt too badly. Roll forward, it’s pain the collarbone, roll back and it hurts the AC. And of course, same with the inflammation and tightness.

I’m waiting for the results next week, if I get any useful info I’ll be sure to post it. My doc said possible separation, otherwise muscle strain. Not very helpful. They gave me a muscle relaxer and said take it easy, which is the exact opposite of my goals. I wanna train!

I feel your pain, not knowing is frustrating, and not training takes the stress release away! Injuries suck, I’ve come to learn. All I can really say is stay positive, work around it as much as possible without aggravating it, and possibly use this time to focus on something else: conditioning, mobility, legs, etc.

Best of luck to you, my bruised but never broken brother.
