Should I Buy an IPad?

I walk past them in my local supermarket everyday and the urge is getting stronger.

Should I indulge myself?

What for?

I want a tablet but for the specific reason that my book shelves are overflowing, that creative stacking has reached its physical limits and that throwing books away to make room is anathema.

That however has not made me look for an IPad, but for as cheap a tablet as possible.

Just for general browsing mainly.

Most people rave about them. Almost to the point of drooling. That’s what has caught my attention.

got my wife one on Amazon, used or refurbed, forget which version 2, 64 GB WiFi+3G for like $500 IIRC

point being, don’t assume you have to buy new, it came in perfect condition and she uses it daily.

It crossed my mind recently, also…

But, for books and browsing, i’d just get Kindle Fire. Much cheaper. My wife loves hers.

My cousin loves his pocketbook 360 (I think thats the model)

I remember him talking about it for a while before getting it, and he did a bunch of research on them first. He’s a cheap bastard - probably just like you

If you stand on your iPad it doubles as a weigh scale.

Give it a try!

If you only knew what I have wasted on utter nonsense…

Alas, we live and learn.

edit: one of the things I have learned is that cheap is not always value for money. I want something that lets me read books for as little dough as is within the reach of mortals without breaking down in the next 2-3 years.

Facebook, ebay, social media, I careth not, I sweareth thus.

Surely a kindle or other ebook reader would be preferable to a tablet then?
My kindle is probably the best bit of tech i have bought in a very long time.

No wai!

Amazon is boxing me in with the Kindle BS, I cannot have that.

Unless I can crack, mod and generally have my gentle, seafooddinnering way with it, I really cannot buy stuff.

I was recently given an ipad for my work, and I do not find it worth the hype. It is easy to carry around, and the screen is very nice. But as a computing device, it is clumsy and not well put together.

For browsing alone, you might find you enjoy it. But as others have mentioned, for half the price you could get another option.

Either way, I’d recommend spending some time on one if you can. I do use mine at work and outside of work, but if I had to buy one on my own, I never would have done it. And if it breaks tomorrow, I certainly won’t replace it. I would get a decent laptop with a solid state drive and a nice screen. Well, I have that already, and it beats the ipad at pretty much everything except weight. And it is still exceptionally light.

No.

Yes.

Typing this from my iPad.

I love my iPad. I use it to take notes at work.

I love my iPad.

Did I say how much I like this thing,?

kindle, piratebay, calibre free software

I want one just for garage band. I have a Toshiba something or other and it sucks. Disconnects from my home network all the time, browsing is slow and clumsy, etc. We got it because it was like half the price of an ipad. Now I know why.

If I had to carry it anywhere, it would prove to be just as cumbersome as a laptop.

I have a laptop, I remain ipad free.

Computer > ipad.

If you really want a tablet, the Nexus 7 looks promising, at a decent price.
Upcoming Windows 8 tablets looks even more interesting. Best of both worlds.

The Windows 8 thing is a…Laptop

And a tablet. Beats buying a toyPad and still having to buy a laptop to pay bills and be productive.

An x86-based Asus Transformer would be amazing.

No. Please get something you can actually use for something instead of a vanity product. Apple products come with a ton of BS - no USB ports, Can’t store your files on them, stuck with iTunes and a ton of other things.
Go Android or even better, Windows.
