Short Squat Video I Made for My Dad

#1

Made this short video of me squatting for my dad, who taught me to lift (the guy in the background of my profile pic, got me started early apparently). I managed to get the background music and the music on my headphones, Hero by Skillet, synced so that its all in time, and you can hear me growling some of the lyrics.

Just thought I would show it off here too.

Cool.

Are you and your dad in different towns now? I bet he's pretty proud that he was able to teach you something that's both physically and mentally challenging and seems to be sticking with you for life.

You do realize that some smart-alec is going to turn this thread into a critique of your squat, right?

no where near parallel

#4

nowhere near parallel

#5

Looked like a good morning.

#6

Not parallel but this is the bodybuilding forum.

Koleah you look pretty tall, whats the height? A lot of bar distance on the squats! Good work I'm sure pops'll be proud.

Form is a lot off.. i cant tell for sure but it appears you have long upper legs and probably poor ankle mobility.. hence the extreme bending over at the low back that your exhibiting. Look at the guy behind you he is closer to correct than you by a long shot. Much easier of course in a smith but still better.. Most of the movement in a squat should be in your legs.. you move so much upper torso to compensate for ankle mobility and possibly long upper legs that it makes this weight even more difficult and stops you from coming even close to parallel..

you either need to open up your legs to accomodate for the leg length ....... ok here is the easiest way to squat properly.. No offense to dad.. grab a dumbell .. hold it in front of your chest with both hands in a squat postion (look up goblet squat if you cant picture it) .. squat but to the floor and make sure when you come down your elbows are inside your knees. which will surely make you change your foot positioning. you will notice a few things here.. first your legs will more than likely be wider than you usually squat.. second you will be keeping your back significantly more upright and you will be coming down inside your legs keeping the weight balanced directly above the ankles..

your power position.. do a bunch of reps and deep.. this should be the same position on the bottom as your squat.. your will realize that your leg size will increase significantly when squatting below parallel.. the rest is just partials.. and potentially hard on your back. Sorry but i cannot simply watch this without giving my advice.. if you dont take my word for it read a ton of articles on the squat and you will see the same thing.

So bodybuilders don't do full squats?

#10

Not only do bodybuilders not do full squats all the time, there are some who don't squat at all. I realize your new to the "iron game" so I recommend reading some good bodybuilding training books (yes even the "ancient" encyclopedia). That's all I'm going to say for now.

He lives in Hawaii where we're from, and I live Washington state. We see each other about once a year now. And yeah, I figured there'd be some critiques. Just gotta keep in mind that this is set 9.

I'm actually only 5'6". The camera is shooting up at an angle a bit so it looks like I'm stopping a little higher than I am. But my goal is always parallel.

Can't tell if trolling or serious, but I'm pretty sure serious. I keep my legs JUST outside shoulder width. I don't keep them any wider since wider grows the inner thighs, and I'm trying to avoid any more of that. (they already rub enough when I run) And having the weight in front like a goblet squat (or like a front squat) changes my form a lot. I'm definitely a lot straighter up, and I go down a bit further. On front squats, I generally bottom out on the squat rack rails if I don't pay attention to not going down that far.

But I do appreciate the review. I'll test out going a little wider with the stance and see if that changes things significantly.

How would you go down if you had to pick a really heavy box on the ground and get back up with it?

Answer :

Feet pointing slightly outside \ /

Shoulder width

Ass not sticking out really..

Pretty much just dropping down vertically

Am I Rite ?

Try squatting like that, seriously

I would really like to be able to find the video but I cant, Dante posted about squats and how they really should be performed.. Maybe someone can chime in if they know the post (posts) im talking about or the video he used as an example

Just try it out, you will see how you would NATURALLY try and pick a box from the ground

#13

I may be new to the forum but I've been in the "iron game" for years junior. Since you're such the bodybuilding genius, you should know that squats should be included in any training program.

#14

Ok Grandpa... lets see the amazing legs that squatting has built for you over the years! Obviously they've gotta be better than mine if you've been in this for years. Otherwise shut the fuck up! roflmao

#15

hahahaha, i think the point is, IF youre going to squat ..... technique needs to be sound. that was an abortion. id say some fr squatting is in order.

lmao...the camera is pointing up.....lame excuse. shut up and squat deep.

I suggest that you read up on the benefits of squatting but you already know those right? You just stick to your leg presses, leg extensions and the isolateraldynopressmaster.

BOOOMMMMMM

My training log is public and I do squats as my main leg exercise, so good fail there.

I'm still waiting to see the massive wheels... tick, tock, tick, tock....

KA-BOOM

#20

Don't have any pics right now but will be upload some in the near future. While we're at it, why don't you show me your "massive wheels" or even better, a video of your squats. I have some videos of my squats but I'm having a hard time transferring the video from my phone to the computer.
