Sherlock Holmes

I saw the movie last night and it was good. Downey and Law do a great job together as Holmes and Watson. I haven’t ever thought of Holmes being an action hero or however you want to coin it, but Guy Richie’s spin on the character nad Downeys portrayal of him makes it pretty refreshing. There’s a lot of humor and a couple of ‘I didn’t see that coming’ twists.

The ending leaves you pretty sure that there’s going to be a second.

What I had problems with: Watson has a gambling problem and Holmes is an alcoholic so therefore Guy Richie is saying that white people are addicted to booze and gambling. And since the two are pretty close associates, he’s also saying all white guys have latent homosexual feelings for their friends. And the women in the movie all have nice teeth, so it’s obviously a slight against EnGlish people for having bad teeth. Obviously this is where the movie becomes unbelieveable because we all know English people have bad teeth.
Also, there’s some experimenting with animals, so it’s obvious that Guy Richie hates animals…in particular dogs and wishes them all death. It’s also apparent in the movie that he’s a hard core Christian and believes that white people will vanguish the evil in the world. So I guess Guy Richie is saying that white people are addicted to gambling and alcohol and have latent homosexual feelings for their male friends and will eventually vanguish the evil in the world.

lol

He’s from OklahomO what’d you expect?

I saw this movie because it was free and let me just say i’m glad i didn’t pay for it.

What because you didn’t get half the references or clues?

I enjoyed the movie. I thought the dynamic between Watson and Holmes was done well. I can see this becoming a franchise, obviously at least a sequel. Downey and Law did great jobs. Lets not forget Rachel MacDaddyAdams. I easily understand why Sherlock is so easily influenced by her. Good movie all around.

I liked the movie.

Spoiler:

At some point I had just accepted that in this version of Holmes, magic was real. I don’t know what I was thinking.

End spoiler

But maybe it was just all the popcorn that I ate giving me a brain fog.

I see what you did there. Well played, sir.

I realise that most of this was taking the piss. But the Holmes being a drunk was used to replace the fact that he was a ridiculas drug addict, he smoked opium and weed to no end in the books. I think they removed this as a drug addicted detective hero wouldn’t work for the general hollywood audience.

I thought the acting was great, I’m just not a fan of the whole “Sherlock Holmes” franchise/story line, wahtever you want to call it. I probably would have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t 85 degrees in the theater.

SPOILER!!!

I loved the parts when he would plot out his plan of attack in his mind for us and then beat some ass, that was cool.

But wouldn’t Downey have played a drug addict naturally as if he weren’t acting…

Thus the problem. How do you justify the million dollar salary if he isn’t working?

How do you NOT pay someone who had a supporting roll in Weird Science a million dollars?

it effin ridiculous how hot it can get, my local is a ‘listed grade 2 building’ basically its got a lot of history and any changes internally and externally are tightly regulated, therefore Odeon cant install aircon - they can cahnge the entire internall layout and plank 6 screens in there, but aircon is a no no???!?!?!

He was in that? Holy shit. I haven’t seen that movie since I was a little kid.

I enjoyed this movie a lot. I think it was quite faithful to Doyle’s portrayal of Holmes’ physical prowess. The funny-looking hat and pipe came from illustrations in the book and from the actors who have portrayed the character in the various film adaptations (i.e., Basil Rathbone). (Personally, I preferred Jeremy Brett, who favored a top-hat.)

At any rate, Downey/Ritchie’s Holmes is a fascinating character and I would definitely pay to see the movie again! Downey and Law did a great job. The action was great, the humor and dialogue were on-target, Downey even did a decent job with the accent . . .

. . . only next time (and I hope there IS a next time), I’m hoping for a better plot. Am I the only one who thought “Scooby-Do” by the end??

BTW, does anyone else think that Downey has a slight pelvic tilt problem, or am I imagining things? I seemed to notice it in Iron Man, but I couldn’t really tell in Holmes. He’s much leaner in the Holmes movie, that’s for sure, but there weren’t many side-shots so I couldn’t tell.
