I go to Kitsap for work two or three times a year.
It’s beautiful.
It’s country.
It’s blue collar.
There is a lot of wildlife, to include bald eagles, deer, raccoons. There’s fishing to be done and lots of great history there as well, from the logging to the whaling that got the whole region on its’ feet back in the day.
However, the weather can go from complete bullshit to not too bad and then back to bullshit in the span of a day or less.
You’ll be working at one of three bases.
Bangor Sub base
Bremerton Hospital
Puget Sound Shipyard in Bremerton proper.
My favorite gym of the three is down at Puget. It’s got everything you need plus a pretty nice pool and despite the location there are very active and motivated Sailors staying fit.
Nightlife: Everything closes pretty early. If you’re relying on entertainment on the Penninsula you’ll want to get out early or you’ll find yourself just getting tuned up when last call happens.
The Main City is Silverdale, which has everything you’d need. Target, a Mall, Movie Theater, a really good brewery-restaurant called “Silver City Brewery.” The beers are nice and the food is borderline great.
My favorite town in the area is Paulsbo, and I’d recommend that you find a place to live up that way. There will be traffic issues no matter where you live because there are only a few main roads.
There are a few ferry stops that will get you to Seattle, I recommend taking the ferry rather than driving for experiencing Seattle. They’re relaxing and you don’t have to worry about DUI’s or navigating Seattle’s tricky downtown in a car. The ferry drops you off mere minutes from Pikes Place which is one of Seattles main attractions.
Seattle is a different post all together, though.
On a Salary of 48k you’re going to be ok. You won’t be super high on the hog, and overall the standard enlisted person who is on a housing allowance will be making just as much as you if not a little more. If you do your due dilligence, though, you’ll find some really nice properties on big pieces of land (couple of acres, maybe more) for a decent price.
If you haven’t already, learn the Navy rank structure and what each rank stands for. If you’re at Bangor you’ll be dealing with the submariner community which at times can be very quirky and aloof. Cliquey, if you will. Security is also very tight on that base and understandably so. The submarines that park there are equipped with enough nuclear weaponry to turn all of China into glass. If you’re with MWR you will more than likely never see where those Submarines are, nor should you ask to see one.
If you’re at the hospital the people there are more social.
If you’re at Puget/Bremerton the people are your standard navy folk, more than likely from the carriers or support staff.
I love visiting and working on the Kitsap Penninsula though, and if I were offered a position there I would really have to sit down with my wife and consider it.
Long post, sorry.
