In a nutshell, Russia opposes this because it sees the economic value in its current and future tradings with Iran. You could argue, therefore, that Russia is looking beyond the possibility that Iran’s Nuclear programme is for war purposes. China will (or does no doubt have a similar view) they are keen to expand their global trade base, particulary into the middle east.
What do people here think of Russia’s stance ? … and bare in mind its probably not going to be what it will be portrayed by the media as.
Paradoxically, any war with Iran would have economic detriment to Russia, so surely Russia would support the British and American proposed sanctions ?
Environmentally, Russia and China could both do with replacing fossil fuel (mainly coal) power generators to curb the effects of global warming, Russia seems more interested in helping other countries with their Uranium enrichment though than with their own issues.
