My guess is that the decrease (and aging) of the Talk Radio audience is most likely a function of technology than any other factor.
“The Limbaugh’s” and their vitriol have moved to the internet/streaming services/FOX, etc. There certainly are some on Satellite radio; but their influence and audience is not nearly as large.
The instant feedback and input abilities the internet outlet provides makes for a much more effective echo chamber than AM radio listener-call-ins ever could.
Did you ever listen to Rush, or did you only listen to people talk about him? Serious question. I think a lot of his critics never actually listened to his show. They just imagine what they think he is saying and criticize him for it.
In regards to comparing Rush to influencers like the Kardashians, a distinction needs to be made on content. Influencers have always existed, but they are traditionally confined to particular to spheres of expertise. The Kardashian type influencer is someone who has no real expertise other than being famous and then comments and influences on whatever. Whether or not Rush was actually a political expert, he claimed a sphere and stuck to it.
Politics is a little weird in this regard because there isn’t an objective measure of politics other than influence. If I want to be an influencer in business or sports or technology, for instance, I probably won’t get far without some evidence of success. In politics, having influence is evidence of success. This is similar to modern sphere less “influencers”, but that is the way politics always worked. You can’t say Rush was the first. Roman politicians were the same types of influencers.
I mostly heard Limbaugh in his public appearances, television interviews and appearances; newscast, etc.
I personally never listened to his radio show (with the exception of outtakes).
I don’t think it’s conservative. I think it’s universal. Maddow and other left wingers are just as good at it, they’re just not on radio.

Oh no, not what I meant. He is certainly not the first political commentator. I would say he was the first to make an industry out of it though. Somewhat like Howard Stern did in his sphere - he was the first widespread shock jock, who made himself an industry. But he wasn’t the first raunchy broadcaster.

I listened some yes but by no means an avid listener. I had jobs where I listened to a lot of radio and conservative talk radio was the only AM option and often I enjoyed it especially when younger even if I didn’t agree with everything. I still listen to AM talk radio almost exclusively usually just sports but will listen to the politics stuff from time to time as we only really have two sports channels.
I also don’t think you have to listen or watch someone too much to get the gist of what they have going on do you? After you’d seen or heard someone like Glenn Beck back in the day or Tucker right now you pretty much know the drill. The topics may change from time to time but the reactions are known. Shit with Hannitty and Tucker types they basically put on the greatest hits of the Obama era when Biden ran.
