Robots Are Coming!

“Mechanical hybrid Terminators are being manufactured by the Department of Defense. These hybrid ‘living’ computers will soon be more intelligent than humans. These systems include armed flying drones.”

“In the U.S., the Defense Department has been the big spender for robots, seeking machines that can protect soldiers’ lives. But interest is simmering in the venture community–a signal that profits lie ahead. Big players are muscling in, too. In May, Microsoft announced that it had a new research program under way, Aimed at developing an operating system and software development tools for robots.”

This is great! real drones this time, finally this is something i’ve always dreamed of since my hay-day of D&D . . instead of your average 23 year old human drones fighting freedom and spreading imperialism err Peace and Democracy. . You* will now have killing machines, Literally!

SWEET! I mean, shit, that’s fuckin’ SCARY! I mean, SWEET!

Shit, I’m so torn here between my geeky love of technology and my paranoid half socialist half libertarian political side, it’s not even funny!

I was being sarcastic too.

That video WAS fucking hilarious though!

MAN, I couldn’t tell if it was serious or a joke!

Yeah, being scared of change is how we got to where we are today.

There is nothing scary about an armed robot. They will only be as smart as we can make them, which is nowhere near the judgment power of a human being. Also, they cannot fire weapons without a human overseer pushing the button.

But the truth makes for a boring non-psycho thread. We’ve had armed unmanned vehicles for quite a few years now.

PS When the machines take over the world and kill all the humans, who’s gonna fix them when they break down? They were built by the lowest bidder, remember?

PPS I knew that you were a D&D nerd.

Robots are trying to drill my brain but my lightning shield inflicts DOA attack, leaving the robots as flaming piles of metal. King Arthur congratulates me for destroying Dr. Robotnik’s evil army of Robot Socialist Republics. The cold war ends. Reagan steals my accomplishments and makes like it was cause of him.

When they make fully functional robots of Jessica Alba or Pam Anderson (or of Jamie Eason!), then we’ll all be interested. If they can moan just right and do exactly what you tell them…

There was an episode of Futurama about this.

How can you be half socialist and half libertarian? That’s kind of like being half man and half woman.

Well, I think it’s the government’s job to look out for the people - to educate them, to feed the hungry, to protect the country… to help those who need it. …and other than that, they should leave us the fuck alone.

You forgot to add that you want the gov’t to help you find a way to eat your cake and have it too.

Is this a joke or are you serious?

Robot machines will never become superior to human soldiers, be used as tools of oppression, or ever be used to win future wars.

I mean look at the airplane, the first time we flew one it only went a few hundred feet, unarmed and unarmored, and now they can kill millions a few decades later.

But that was a different technology so it obviously won’t happen with this one.

I mean scientific advancements and breakthroughs in robotics is inevitable, but it isn’t like there will be any military significance or value in a soulless expendable soldier with the capacity to be endlessly reinforced. I mean they will probably even break down so they are useless.
KOO-KOO, KOO-KOO. Loon.

In the near future -
“Hey John! I’m 30 and 0! with 8 headshots! Pass me another snickers my fatty tits are sweating from all this honor and combat”

lol - nono, see, the socialist side of me is totally OK with the taxes I’d have to pay for this. I’m A-OK payin’ the g’vt so they’ll leave me alone. I’m also A-OK with them educating the public and providing healthcare. What I’m NOT ok with is them making every stinkin’ substance, naturally occuring or not illegal, filling jails with stoners and meth heads, and putting our valuable fiscal resources into taking care of those idiots that would otherwise self destruct out in the real world instead of making higher education FREE. The only thing that should be illegal is doing harm to others or to the environment. So basically, no stealing, no driving while intoxicated by ANY substance, no fighting unless both parties are willing participants as attested to by witnesses (to my mind this includes mortal combat - yes, duels should still be legal), no rape, etc. The only substance that SHOULD BE ILLEGAL without a prescription from a doctor is antibiotics. There should also be addiction recovery programs for those that want to get off of whatever it is they’re addicted to, wheter it’s vicodin or meth. Legalize it, tax the shit out of it, and leave me the fuck alone. Gay marriage? Polygamy? Polyandry? I don’t give a fuck, let people do whatever the hell they want to. It simply doesn’t concern me unless they are doing harm to others.

The thing is, no matter HOW GOOD Audio/Visual technology gets, nothing will beat actually BEING THERE. Add to that the extra time for transmission and actuation on the drone’s part, not to mention the exorbitant cost of MANUFACTURING said drones, and they really won’t be as effective as a real soldier. Besides, these things can’t exactly go anywhere… they need roads or at least open terrain. no stairs. no climbing. no squeezing under fences, or thru cracks in walls.

To be honest, a well armored human soldier is a FAR superior weapon, and always will be.

Ok I obviously can’t argue with the brilliant/thought-out points you made, I can only reinforce them:

This explains why bombers/fighters and vehicles/tanks will always lose to a man with a rifle, because of stairs, the inability to climb through cracks.

The face of warfare is shifting bro… like it or not, but men with rifles are currently winning against bombers, tanks, and other superior technology.

That depends upon your definition of “winning.”

Outlasting/surviving IS winning. If they can outlast us, they will win. simple. It’s how the Viet Cong won Vietnam. I’m confident that within our lifetimes, we will not see robot soldiers that can take the place of human soldiers. Suppliment? maybe. replace? no way.

This simply doesn’t bode well for Sara Conner.
