Whenever the Valsalva maneuver is mentioned in Exercise Science, it’s always “blah blah, raises your blood pressure don’t do it!”. You will never, ever seen a mention of intra-abdominal pressure anywhere.
I also know that Mark Rippetoe has said that no deadlift over 700 lbs has ever been pulled without it.
Is there any research that demonstrates the protective effect that Valsalva has on the spine? SPecifically statistics, not just intra-abdominal pressure (for example, although McGill’s lab has shown the increase in IA from belts there’s also no decrease in injury rates). Anybody have anything?
