Radar Detectors

So, last night coming home on the highway I caught an acura RL come up behind me. As I pulled out of the left lane to let him pass me, I realized he had a radar detector. I followed behind him, and needless to say, we were goin faster than the speed limit.

Now, I dont need to hear lectures about reckless driving, endangering other lives, ect. Thanks.

Anyway, I’m looking to get one. I’ve wanted one for a while, but figured I’d actually treat myself and pick one up. I’m looking at the Bel vector 995, and I can get it for a pretty decent price. More importantly, it’s got good reviews.

Anyone got any tips, comments, advice, or anything to be careful of while using one?

More often than not, youll end up relying on the detector to look for cops, which most of the time will get you more tickets anyway.

Couple problems I see:

#1 Cops don’t always leave their radar gun on, and can switch it on and off as they like, making it more likely for you to get nailed if you get hit with it while speeding.

#2 Detectors can’t do shit against laser. Once laser is detected, your already hit and you’ll be pulled over if you were speeding.

My only reason to get one would be if you have some hot looking sports car that cops love to pull over.

I live in California and have the Escort 8500, which along with the Valentine are the two best brands out there in the studies I’ve seen.

This thing has gotten me out of countless jams. It detects Ka band laser for a very long distance.

I drive with impunity on the freeway knowing that this thing will pick everything up. If you regularly drive over the speed limit and don’t have one you are basically driving blind, in my opinion.

Look in to the 8500 before you buy another brand. It had paid for itself multiple-fold in avoided speeding tickets. It doesn’t provide the direction of the radar gun being used but who cares, if you see the Ka band detector light up you slow down until it doesn’t.

Fuck it man, if they try to pull you over just run. Live life on the edge.

I would not advise on a radar detector. It is no secret that I am a police officer, just look at my profile. I am more likely to give a speeding ticket to someone with a radar detector than any other person. Simply for the fact that they are trying to use a piece of equipment to outwit me or the law if you will(LOL).

Before you go and jump on the ol’ “screw the pigs” verdict, I am a very fair officer. You are also more likely to get a warning from me if you are honest when I pull you over, and believe me, I have heard some BIG stories!!

Just use the “I have to go to the bathroom really bad” story. Tell when if you don’t get home within the next 5 minutes, shit will go down (literally). Never fails

You’re a wuss. If you’re going to speed, just fucking speed. Why add the extra anxiety of a radar dector? It’s something you shoudn’t be paying attention to anyway if your going to be a wreckless prick on the road.

I too serve on the thin blue line, and more often than not if I see the driver with a radar detector, that = automatic ticket. It pretty much takes away any valid excuses of “I didn’t mean to speed, or I wasn’t paying attention” a radar detector pretty much means you wanted to break the law and that does not bode too well with many officers.

Also, radar detectors don’t always detect lasers which is the new hot toy that we use to catch speeders. All in all, I would advise you not to purchase a radar detector because it will probably be more trouble than it is worth. Not to mention it is illegal in some states. Just my two cents…

my buddy has had lots of detectors and right now he swears the valentine one is the best thing ever.

but here’s the thing : he thinks his frickn car is a night club and doesn’t pay attention to his surroundings. when i ride with him i’m pointing out cops all the time. he’s got that detector but he still gets a few tickets a year and his insurance points are always maxed. he drives about 15,000 miles a year.

i drive about 40,000 miles a year and have a single ticket to show over the last 4 years, knock wood. not because i’m driving the limit or i’m magic but because i don’t drive like a tool and i pay attention to the 360 degrees around me. eyes always moving and think about what you see.

i borrowed his detector for a couple of weeks and it was of no use to me. also i couldn’t stand the thing beeping all the time.

I have owned both Valentine one and Escort 8500 x50. Sold the x50 because I liked the v1 better.

It’s definitly worth it if you drive a lot or have a 1-2 hour trip you make every week.

Run? Fuck that! Hunt! That’s living life on the edge! Let the fucking side of bacon pull you over. Let him come up to your car. Smile at him real nice, make like you’re taking out your registration, then BAM! Stab him in the heart with an adrenaline needle! Or 5. Obviously police officers are inherently evil…don’t you listen to those brilliant sociologists, N.W.A?

i have only found radar detectors helpful to give a heads up on a country road where a cop may be hiding out on. otherwise, if you are on any type of busy highway, freeway, etc. with any kind of traffic flow on it you are usually forced to slow down for the cop cause of the cars around you jamming on their brakes.

i have one but don’t use it anymore because like the cop in this post said he’s more likely to ticket someone with it and to be honest they are not that helpful unless you have a high quality one are drive in excess of 30mph over the speed limit all the time.
