N.J. Mayor Steps Down Claiming Racism

It’s a sad day for Charles Tyson and it’s a shameful day for the state of race relations in our country. Tyson is stepping down from his post as Mayor of South Harrison Township in New Jersey. He says the death threats and racist vandalism he and his family have endured are not worth it anymore.

At a reorganization meeting Monday, a five-member committee planned to nominate and vote on community leadership positions, including the role of Mayor.

Tyson, the town’s first black Mayor, turned down his nomination and put an end to his term as Mayor since 2007. Tyson said he did not want to continue serving as mayor, but agreed to stay on as deputy mayor.

Not long after being elected two years ago, Tyson said he received emails and phone calls warning him that he was being watched and calling him a ?dead man.? No arrests were ever made in relation to those threats. Investigators said whoever made the calls used disposable phones.

Tyson also had his tires slashed and a sign on his lawn bedecked with ?KKK.?

A member of a neo-Nazi organization was indicted last month for making other threatening phone calls to Tyson and other African Americans, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Some residents in the town see it as a political rather than a racial issue. They claim Tyson plays the race card whenever he gets criticized.

Robert Campbell was elected mayor and Tyson Deputy Mayor at Monday?s meeting.

Text of a letter sent to Tyson by white supermacist Bill White:

"Dear Mayor Charles Tyson:

I recently read of the racism you?ve faced in Harrisonville, New Jersey, and I wanted to make something perfectly clear:

a) You are a nigger unworthy to govern over any white man; and,

b) Fuck you. You?ve gotten exactly what you deserve from your constituents.

Unfortunately, the days when white men would simply burn the local newspaper and run nigger officials out with tar and feathers are past. However, your incidents give me hope that perhaps we shall see them again.

Bill White, Commander
American National Socialist Workers Party

PS: We know you live at [ADDRESS REDACTED] [PHONE NUMBER REDACTED]. I just spoke to your wife Carolyn. I hope you got my message."

There will always be racism. However, he got elected, no? But, he lets a tiny minority chase him from office? Was he expecting utopia?

Edit: An no, I’m not blaming the victim. But when you’re a leader, you have to stand up to stuff like this.

Maybe holding the office was not as important to him as the safety of his family?

Maybe he didn’t feel it appropriate to make the decision concerning risks to other family members?

Either way, while it would be nice to have people able to stand up to such threats, not everyone can.

Those are obvious. I’m just thinking outloud, really. It appears he had plenty of support from his consitutents, regardless of their, or his, race. Just a shame that some fringe dwellers scored a clear victory here.

Unfair shit happens all the time. The question is…what do we do about it?

“Forcing equality” via things like affirmative action, or having social condemnation for anything any white person said that equates some problem with “black culture” is not a suitable alternative.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with condemning the negative effects of a culture and recognizing that that culture frequently exists within a particular demographic.

I never understood why it is not racist to wear a shirt that says “Don’t worry about it, its a black thing”. But if the reverse were said it would be. Double standard?
If it is not alright for me to say it, then it is not alright for you to say it, in any context. I think racism has to stop from EVERYONE! Until then, racism will be alive and well.

What? I see “Polish Pride,” “Proud to be German,” and “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” shirts all the time.

The best cure for racism is to simply ignore it. Attempting some sort of fix always pisses someone off and perpetuates it. As long as government stays out of it, favoring no group, it’ll eventually die out.

Until it simply dies out on its own, leave it alone.

This mayoral election and the recent presidential election are proof that corporate racism is indeed dead.

The fact that there are individuals and small groups who are still racist or outright friggin nuts is irrelevant. It doesn’t reflect the majority.

In reality many folks really don’t want equality. There are many people who believe in racial preferences. Websters has racism as:

Main Entry: rac·ism
Pronunciation: ˈrā-ˌsi-zəm also -ˌshi-\
Function: noun
Date: 1933
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

So are not racial preferences a form of prejudice or discrimination???

Is not affirmative action then racist?
Is not the use of quotas then racist?
