If I want to focus on building muscle, is it better to do higher reps for squats/deads with less weight or more weight with less reps?
It all works, just get to the gym and make sure that every month you’re stronger than the month before
I wouldn’t go too high on reps for deadlifts as your form deteriorates too much for high reps.

ah yes true
6-10 reps on deadlifts, 12-20 reps on squats worked best for me
on compounds i like to keep the reps moderate, 6-8. i focus more on the weight being used because a compound isnt designed for isolation so why take an isolation rep scheme to it ie, 10-20?
so yes, id suggest keep them lower with moderate reps and focus your higher rep sets on isolation moves.
my favourite rep range for squats is 6-8, for deads its 4-6 to make sure i stay as close to perfect form as i can
