Quantum Levitation

Awesome.

What is this? The Star Trek forum?

I’m just kidding.

That is awesome. Where can I get frozen nitrogen?

If we could do that with metalics, that could make for an interesting car suspension.

do you have more on the science behind it?

^ Sadly, no. Just sharing something I thought was cool. I’m sure there is plenty more info out there that can be googled etc.

That is so ridiculously cool/awesome.

They froze a magnet with liquid nitrogen. Apparently the process allows them to control it. There was a post about a real hoverboard a few years back using magnets. It did float except it was static.

Defects in a superconductor can cause “flux pinning” where the magnetic flux of the magnet will get caught in the superconductor. Since the flux can’t move through the SC, the SC has to move with the magnet.

If anyone is really that interested, they have entire books on the topic: Flux Pinning in Superconductors - Teruo Matsushita - Google Books

that is so fucking badass

that is the coolest thing ive seen for ages
