Pushing 60 Years Old

Happy Birthday Cav! Hope you had a great day!

Happy birthday. Lots of great years ahead.

Actually, I spent the day filing for unemployment and looking for a new job. Thursday, however, I went to Golden Corral and ate the place into bankruptcy. Steak, ribs, BBQ chicken . . . yumm. This was right after the workout, so I was hungry.

For what it is worth, I am sixty.

For vacation this year, at the wife’s suggestion, we hiked almost fifty miles on the AT Trail.

Really enjoyed it.

My weight had been around 205 for about four years or so, now down to 181.6 this morning.

That’s wonderful, Elaikases. Myself, I’m aiming to gain weight so I can push some serious iron.

Put on a couple of pounds bodyweight, yah. Squats really surprising me, 185 feels no tougher than 155.

Body feels pretty beat up, going to take a week off. Probably do some conditioning like swimming or something.

I feel ya on the job hunting. I got a call from a recruiter for some contract work. I was told to take off my earliest position because it made me look old. I guess I’m sort of thankful for the tip as I’ll probably take it off certain applications, but did nothing for my self-esteem. All these companies talk the talk of diversification, but I’ve only come across one that actually did, so far.

Age discrimination is a real thing, so yeah, trim your resume down to the most recent years. I don’t know how you feel about contract work, but in general I’ve had good luck with recruiters. They give me tips about what the company wants and always get me a fair pay. I just got notes from a couple of staffing places with openings, so I’ll try and keep my chin up.

Any updates on your training ?

Sorry about not keeping up. Job hunting has been getting me down. Also, gains have come very slowly, which is normal, so not much to report.

As usual, I increased plates regularly, but that came with a price of reduced reps. For squats, got up to 9 reps of 175 back in Apr, then went up to 185 for 3 reps. Then up to 195 for 3 reps for a few weeks. Then 205 - yah! - for 3 reps. Except form wasn’t good, as soon as I got good depth, could barely knock off a double - the second rep was a grinder. So Monday I went back to 175 and did 10 reps. So 4 months of hard work on squats, twice a week, lead to a one rep gain on same weight.

Same for the other lifts. Decided to go for triples in bench - anything to get weight up. Got 135 for a triple, then 140 Monday. But the third rep hit failure, could barely rack the bar. So have to reduce weight and try more reps.

Deadlift: was doing warmups, then three work sets of same weight. However, as soon as broke 200 lbs, the first work set wore me out so much had to reduce weight on next sets. Last dead session, I got 235 for 8 reps, but hit failure on the last, so more 7 and half. Did one more work set at 205 x 8, then quits.

Was going up on misc stuff, leg extension, DB raise, etc, but didn’t seem to translate too much to the big lifts. Or maybe they did, just barely measurable.

The whole body sessions were really hard on my body, switching to a split for a while. So that’s pretty much what’s happening.

Hey Cav. Job hunting sucks, I don’t have any advice really, was just turned down for one two days ago. I’m just getting over it. Are you doing any bits and pieces on the side? We have the weights, I’m not giving up the gym again. The dog walking is paying for that at least.

1 more rep is 1 more rep. But things are kind of funny, you might see another increase next week, it’s never linear for me.

progress is progress , even when it’s slow  And even if you only improve form, that’s success too ! Keep training and most importantly enjoy it.

Had a moment, so decided to bring everyone up to date. Have been doing a high volume routine, technically 10x10. Advantages: not getting injury from max efforts, recovering better, actually added couple pounds bodyweight in the past month and it wasn’t around my waist. Downside: damn exhausting. Must be mental, my body doesn’t feel so beat up. But it’s hard to look forward to almost an hour to do squats and hour for deadlifts.

Here’s workouts for past week:

Tues
Squat
145 x 10
145 x 10
145 x 10
145 x 10
155 x 10
155 x 10
155 x 10
135 x 10
135 x 10
that’s up a little from last week

Leg Curl
100 x 10
100 x 10
100 x 10
funny how curls seems to be getting easier

Crunch
x 10 x 10 x 10

Thurs
Bench
100 x 10
100 x 10
100 x 10
100 x 10
100 x 10
100 x 10
95 x 10
95 x 7
100 x 7
pressing runs out of steam fast, will take reps down

Incline bench
65 x 10
95 x 5
95 x 5
95 x 5
95 x 5
95 x 5

Tri pulldown
80 x 7
80 x 7
nine sets total, all same

Sat
Deadlift
185 x 10
185 x 10
185 x 10
185 x 10
165 x 10
165 x 10
155 x 10
155 x 10
155 x 10
was starting to get some palpitations, it’s stress from job hunting. When I’m focused, deads aren’t too bad

Chins
x 6 x 5 x 5

As long as I’m eating, especially meat, feeling good.
