Program for Girlfriend Starting Out?

I myself am not too new to weightlifting. My girlfriend on the other hand wants to start. She doesn’t want to be a power lifter, but she doesn’t want to be a cardio bunny either. Basically looking for a good balanced program that will allow her to decrease BF %, get stronger and more toned, and still work on cardio.

I personally do Bill Starr’s 5x5 with some 1 rep max days thrown in here and there. I’m thinking she’d want something with more repetitions and a faster pace for fat loss?

Any opinions would be great… especially from an experienced female.

Thanks

I guess I lose points for not being a female, but Olesya Novik has a nice, basic program on MuscleWithAttitude.com.

You could also just start her on Rippetoe/Kilgore’s Starting Strength plan. http://www.startingstrength.com

Remember that, for the most part, an effective program will be gender-neutral.

I second Rippetoe, and here is the free version

There’s nothing saying she can’t do this or a 5x5 routine. She could do 3x8 instead of 3x5.

I’m currently on Waterbury’s 10x3 For Fat Loss, very good mix of cardio and strength training.

Get her the book…
New Rules of Lifting for Women

For one, it will give her the WHYS as to why she is doing these things. It will also let her be a self learner and be proactive in her development.

Don’t forget diet… the best lifting program in the world will give less than mediocre results if she doesn’t have good dietary habits.
