President's Speech to School Kids

Perhaps you should pull your children from the FREE public school system. I’m sure you could have more control over a private school education.
Free? Not so much.
kirsching wrote:
Then when it comes to the public school curriculum why should your opinion matter anymore than my childless opinion? I pay taxes just like you.
BECAUSE YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND

Appealing directly to the children…while their at school? Name even one other President who has done this? Come on wacko libs who else has done this? If he wants to talk to kids why doesn’t he do it while they’re at home? Why usurp the parents authority?

This whole thing stinks…just like everything else this socialist has touched.
…what would you have him do while in school; read 'm childrenstories or something?

What is wrong with talking to the youth? What is wrong with the questions that are suggested of students to try and answer.

unreal.

Let the guy talk to the youth

If he was going to get up there and say “work hard stay in school” and sit down then I would agree with you. Chances are though hes going to use it as a chance to further his political agenda to kids.
…and when it is a “work hard stay in school” speech, will that make any difference for you?

We have learned the hard way that the ideal society formulated by our Founders is simply the butt of jokes. We have a government of Goldman/JP Morgan, by Goldman/JP Morgan, and for Goldman/JP Morgan.

It is NOT an accident who happened to be one of the biggest donors to Obama’s candidacy.

“The firm tends to give most of its money to Democrats. A number of high-ranking government officials in recent years have spent part of their careers at Goldman Sachs.”

Well whoopdefuckin doo.

Not everyone has the 10k a year to spend on that, though.
Doesn’t cost anywhere near that, but nice try. Perhaps more people would send their kids to better schools if they had control of their tax dollars via vouchers.

Nice try on the race card. You’re correct that the curriculum is shit. Note: The curriculum was shit waay before NCLB. I’m not sure why you’re using that argument, I don’t support NCLB or anything near it.

GWB could have vetoed it for sure, but you should be blaming Teddy who authored it and the overwhelming ‘bipartisan’ Congress that passed it and voted on the funding.

Truth. There was just another case of a government school teacher molesting a kid in school.

Why do people blame Bush for that piece of shit? That was government legislation written by Kennedy and meant for Al Gore…

Oh, what was that sign on Truman’s desk? I can’t quite recall what it says, maybe you can help me…

He signed it and defended it. He could have used one of his 25252 vetos on it if he really wanted to. So stop.
On this we agree. I’m just making the point that it’s Teddy’s baby, GWB just delivered it to the people.

As silly as I think the noise over this is, what’s with the black comment? Don’t you think you’re exploiting his race? I’m starting to see this ALOT, lately. Here, and otherwise. I’m serious, you start getting into a disagreement about Obama with someone, and they’ll slip in that he’s black. Sometimes timed perfectly, so you don’t cath their implication until later. But usually, awkardly, like here. You can only cry wolf so many times, before people stop caring.

I have no problem with it all. It’ll be cool for the kids to have the US President speaking to them. And, if it’s basically, an “education is good for you, so stay in school” deal, what’s the problem?

Its not the speech itself that bothers most people. Presidents have done this kind of speech before. It was the lesson plan that the Dept. of Education sent out with a bunch of leading questions like “What can you do to help and support the president”, and “How did the president inspire you today?”. I believe that lesson plan has since been retracted or modified. Either way, things are a bit too tense right now to be getting political with peoples kids. Its not surprising that this touched a nerve.

Help and support him with what? With the idea of getting kids to stay in school? To realize the importance of their education? I’m assuming the question is related to the topic of his speech.

Seriously, these distractions are starting to annoy me. There really are serious issues that we can disagree with him on. Heck, some of his ideas rightfully deserve outrage. So, can we stop distracting from the real stuff, with all this birther, hand-washing, “stay in school” speech, stuff?
What people don’t realize is that this “Lesson Plan” gives teachers, which are mostly liberal, the forum to discuss politics and steer the kids their way. THAT is the issue. when you are losing in the polls, you need to go after the youth.

If it turns partisan, I’ll say I was dead wrong. I hope my unusual comrades (the lefties) on this issue would do the same. But, if we’re right, will we see the opposite?

Maybe you guys in Maine are allowed to trade a lobster and a pocketknife for an education, but you try to send your kids private around here and you will pay out the ass for it. And yes, it does cost that much.

I am against measuring things with standardized tests. I’m just saying that it made things even worse.

Understood. But it still makes it Bush’s.

For Delbarton, a private school in NJ around here: “Tuition is about $24,975 per year. Books are extra, estimated between $400 and $600 per year. Optional transportation costs $1,300 to $3,000 annually.[9]”

======
Bergen Catholic, another big one around here -

Tuition- $9,800
IBM Thinkpad & Software (freshmen only), Books & Supplies approx. $1,800
Registration Fee (new students only) $300
Technology Fee (one time only) $250
Senior Graduation Fee $275

======

Don Bosco- $10,225

Most run around $10k, the better ones are nearly triple.

Because I truly believe it makes many people dismiss him immediately. Can’t tell you how many terrible things I hear people call him based on his race alone.

When he wants to do things like this, race always gets interjected. Maybe you don’t think like this, but lots of people do.

I caught that too. Folks like Irish have no problem interjecting the race status of our (HALF black) president when it is completely irrelevant because it modus operandi for liberals. Get out the Louisville Slugger with “race” written on it in permanent marker and beat whitey to death at every single opportunity.
When I stop hearing people refer to him as “the nigger president,” “President Nig nog,” or simply, “That Fucking Nigger”, then I’ll stop pulling it. How bout that?

Well, no, Peter, I do understand.

You do pay taxes just like me. In that regard, we all have a stake in it, even the OP.

I have a bit more of a stake in it because to some extent, the Feds mandate things that MUST be taught in all schools, even home schooling. So, even though there is some leeway in a private setting, we are still swept along to some extent by Federal regulations. It really does boil down to having kids.

The US Federal Government should have no stake in education. If states want to mandate control, that’s a little better. That’s as far as it goes.

Incidentally, states are not FORCED to enforce NCLB, however, they’re so addicted to Federal money, that they must because of the penalties (ie withholding of funds) imposed on them.

“The Real Cost of Public Schools”

In yesterdayâ??s Washington Post I pointed out that DC public schools are spending about $24,600 per pupil this school year â?? roughly $10,000 more than the average for area private schools. There wasnâ??t room to explain those estimates in the Post, so I provide the details here.

Oh I agree. Don’t get me started on the fucking teachers union. The whole thing is busted.

But that doesn’t mean the President making a “work hard in school” speech is being COMPLETELY overreacted to by wingnuts who want to go after him for everything they can.

Kind of exactly like consistantly calling Palin a PIG right? Except, you don’t know WHY you call her that. You would rather assume your name calling has merit while the others MUST be because of color…right?
